Why go on a vacation if all you want to do is watch a movie?

Why do people want to go spend hundreds of dollars for some fancy hotel then go do stuff you could do from home, like watch a movie. I just don't get it.

As someone that has dropped quite a bit of coin for hotels, if you are close to what you are going to go see then it is worth it. Now on vacation, I am all about "Best Westerns" or the like. Those are rooms that you spend longer than a few nights in.

you are kind of missing my question. My wife wants to go on vacation. And for vacation she wants to go shopping at a mall and go watch movies.
We literally live 10 minutes from the biggest mall in texas. And about 15 minutes away from 2 different Imax theaters.
Why bother staying in a hotel that isn't as big as my apartment? And doing the same thing we can do locally. I just don't get it.

I missed the question because that wasn't your question... Where does she want to go? Shopping in ...Say... New York is different than Houston. Does she want to get a hotel down the street? Where does she want to go??

San Antonio. Like once we went to Florida with a bunch of friends and all they wanted to do was watch movies in the beach house.

As long as I didnt have to watch the movies and could do what I wanted to do all would be fine. When were in the keys all my wife wants to do is lay by the pool with a fruity rum drink..... which leaves me plenty of time to fish and dive, everybody wins

New York, Chicago etc. Just fun place to "shop" . Those cities advertise their shopping "experiences".

I'm assuming you mean Katy Mills? It's big, but not hugh. If you're coming here, then it's North Star or our fairly new outdoor mall, Shops At La Cantera. Come on down. While she's shopping at La Cantera, you can go to Fiesta Texas which is right up the street. If you're into golf, the weekend after next is the Valero Texas Open at La Cantera. Go watch some good golf while she's shopping. The new IMAX Palladium theater is huge, and it even has an 'adult theater' whereby you can have a beer while watching the movie. It's at the Rim, which is across I-10 from Six Flags and La Cantera. Want a cheap room? There's a Motel 6 down the street for I think $55/night. Sounds to me like a failrly cheap Mother's Day present.

Hey...it is all about not having to go to work. When I am on vacation, sometimes I clean my house top to bottom. Sometimes I go to the hotel and watch a movie. Sometimes I visit relatives. But mostly I am happy just to not have to go to work.
(Been on the job 33 years) I get 5 weeks paid vacation, 5 personal days, and three sick days. Paid holidays as well. Xmas eve, Xmas, new years eve, new years day, good Friday, 4th of July, Memorial day, Labor day, and thanksgiving and the day after thanksgiving.
On those days I do whatever I want, and nothing to do with work
life doesn't get better than that.

This is for September, or did you mean Memorial Day? There's a bunch of tourist here that weekend, but not enough where you couldn't find a hotel room. Sorry, I didn't read where you said this was an anniversary trip. I just thought you were taking an extended weekend vacation. If you want a romantic getaway, take her to Fredricksburg. There's plenty of these quaint B&B's you can stay at, and Main Street is full of antique stores and shops. The Nimitz Navy Museum is there, and you can also take a trip over to Enchanted Rock and climb The Dome.
Actually, I've worked a golf tourney once on my anniversary. My wife had to work that day, so I didn't have anything else to do. That's what the evening is for.

yeah, I meant memorial day weekend. Yeah I checked it was the weekend before. That is good.
I still don't get why people climb enchanted rock. I guess the view is beautiful up at the top but still.

There's actually other parts of the park besides the dome that people hike. I have buddies that go out there and mountain climb up one of the faces. There's also some small caves to explore. I've done the Dome Climb a couple times myself. I just like it for the exercise. The view ain't that bad either.

For baseball, our coach thought it would be a good idea to have to run up it. That sucked balls. Maybe that is why I was never enthused by it.
Yeah, the other stuff like the caves around there is much more fun to do.
I'd rather just go sit on the frio however.

So San Antonio & Houston are like, what, 2-3 hours apart? My Texas experience pertains only to Houston & Dallas, so i don't know what San Antonio is like, but can it be that much different? (no offense intended, honest question).
I would not let my wife book a room in K.C. (2.5-3 hrs away) to shop and watch movies. Maybe, maybe drive down and back to shop, but even that is really pushing it. If we a going on a vacation it will be to Colorado, Seattle, Portland, Tampa Bay, etc. Somewhere that the layout is completely different. Go to Colorado Springs or something, I heard Colorado is hurting for tourist this year with the economy and all...

Three hours is a good estimate. I grew up in Houston. It's night and day compared with San Antonio. San Antonio is the number one tourist location in Texas. Not that's a good thing, but there's The Alamo (personally don't get the attraction), The Riverwalk, Sea World, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Spanish Missions, and a host of other things where they celebrate the Hispanic tradition. Shopping's not bad either. I know several people from Houston, Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Austin that spend time here for vacations. I don't think of San Antonio that way anymore because I've lived here since 1980.

Frio's kinda low right now due to the drought. Garner State Park is still nice though, even when the river is a little low.
