why would a leather just die?

I had recently discovered the reason to a nitrate problem that had been plaguing me for many months, as well as battling a phosphate problem...
for a long time my trates had averaged 35-50+ for close to 10 months and i have recently gotten them down to 15-20 for the last month.
and my phosphates were at 2! i have been running phos-guard for a few weeks and it has been dropping down to 1 and hopefully more - why its so high is another thread altogether (i have no clue).
anyway since the water quality has been getting better, everything has been thriving, and looking fuller and larger and happier. then, all of a sudden, my single oldest toadstool leather, probably 9 months old starting shriveling and shrinking and looked terrible over a 4 day period. no signs of getting better, it was dead... so i cut it out because i didnt want it to start emitting ammonia. when i did take it out, my ammo and trites were at .25 which i am attributing to the dead leather carcass....
anyone have any ideaS?

oh yes i want to add that when i started adding phosguard the bottle said make sure to rinse first, because the powder could irritate corals. i have washed it very thoroghly every time and it still emits a little white cloudiness when first applied, but not much at all.

I had problems with trates when my tank was cycling. I used nitrate sponge and still do once in a while.... works for me. Also....check your water source.... I buy my water at the supercenter close to your house.... their parameters are really good.

i make my salt water with RO from big als,
i guess the point is the big picture - the water has been the best it has ever been and everything is doing well, and my oldest leather only decided to shrivel up and die - so why?

yes it has done that many times in the past and usually peels off pretty quickly, it began to shrink and shrink getting worse over 4 days, and even keeled over in the end as it could no longer bear the weight of its own 'head'
