I have a puffer and I want to get a Niger Trigger but I don't know if they will kill each other. Anyone know if the will cohabitate? Thanks

It is a dogface puffer. I also heard that the triggers eat smaller fish and I have a couple damsels. Should I hold off or take a chance? I want the Niger Trigger but I don't want all my other fish to get killed.
Oh yeah, I have a 55g tank.

I think it depends on the personality of the fish. I have a neighbor who has a puffer and a niger and they are best friends. I put a small niger in with my puffer and the niger would not leave the puffer alone. He was constantly ramming into him and nipping at him. I finally had to remove the niger.

We have a 300 gal with a stars and stripes puffer, an imaculate puffer, and 2 porcupines with a piccasso and a niger triger they all get along fine. We also have 4 tangs, lion, emperor angel, and a blue damsel (2" long) that was first in.

I didn't even think about the tank being to small. I guess I will take a pass on the Trigger. I really wanted it though. My puffer doesn't swim around that much so I think he is fine in that size tank.

Your right they cant swim worth a damn but eventually just because of sheer size he'll need a bigger tank. they get to be over a foot long. also if you want to add tank mates eventually he may not care to share a 55g with anything else especially with him being in there 1rst. I love dogface puffers, they look just like a bulldog with a fishes body.

I'm stupid, it's a porcupine puffer not a dogface. He won't get a foot long will he?

Actually, it'll get bigger.
If you plan on keeping the Porc, plan on upgrading to at least triple the size tank you have now.

F*ck! I am planning on getting 125g in about a year. How fast will he grow? I thought they stayed small. Ignorance isn't bliss, it's a curse.

Research is the greatest tool, in this hobby.
Never, ever buy a fish without knowing it's max size, it's diet, it's temperment, suitable tank mates, etc.

You could always trade it for a toby puffer. All of those get no bigger than 6" tops and will do fine forever in a 55g. Some of those are the saddle, saddle valentini, hawaiian blue, hawaiian spotted, honeycomb and probably more species. the large puffers grow pretty fast. Porcupine can get to be a a foot and a half. If you have to get prickly puffer the spiney box doesn't grow nearly as big as the porcupine (probably somewhere between the small tobies and large puffers) but are suppose to be one of the harder puffers to keep.

I have a 100 gal right now just started out my first tank and all ready looking to buy a 300 gal soon lol im addicted but back to topic...
I have a porcupine puffer, stars and stripes puffer both with a Niger Trigger that is large and a smaller Clown Trigger and both are showing not aggression at all. The Niger from what I hear are pretty harmless and calm. My puffer is more aggressive when feeding and you should never worry about that fish going hungry the way they eat... at least mine...Hes my fav he fallows me around the tank and looks like ET i love it
