How are you going to change airstones? The output need to come off the bottom on the outside. A sliding coupler works well for water height adjustment. You could use uni-seals and PVC instead of barbs.
Have you thought about going to a recirc style?

Honestly a skimmer powered by an airstone is nowhere near as effective as one with a venturi or something similar.

Here is an exploded view of the skimmer that built. Also a pic of the first version. I have gone through 3 versions and I hope that I improved it each time.........

can you give a little direction to this.. such as were the water in comes from and the water out. also is that the pump that black thing or is that a bubble trap??

The more I look at that pic the more I notice that really doesn't look a lot like the version now. Let me take some pics and I give you a run down.

The ones we made we used clear so as we can actually control the water flow etc when it is pvc you lose sight and thats a big problem imo.
