Windows 8/ Great or a Mistake?

I did visit BB but wasn't familiar enough with it to actually test drive it. Why are you using it? Did you just buy a Win8 machine, or can't you just revert back to W7?

I can revert it back but I want to give a fair use to give it some chance before i revert to my custom tailored made windows 7.

I hope your Lenovo experience is far better than mine. I had a B520 that was the single biggest pile of steaming, well you get the idea LOL!
Couldn't be ANY worse than her Apple experience...that POS was in the shop 3 or 4 times in a year...that design definitely has heat management issues, which I specifically asked about at the Apple store given the AIO construction. Of course, their reply was "Oh no...there are no problems like that."

Why are you guys all capitalizing MAC?! Lol.
I love XP and my dad still uses it on his desktop. It's probably the best operating system of all time. My 1 laptop has win 7 and the other is a Macbook on lion.
Personally I like the Mac more but also really like win 7. I also have a kindle fire and have played with the iPad several times, I like the iPad more. My parents failed with androids and my sister has one but I like my iPhone more.
I grew up being a Windows person and thinking Apple products were all weird and oddly new, but after experience with them... I will admit it... I would rather go Apple than Microsoft or Samsung...

I am a huge tech nerd and I have been using apple even before people thought they were cool and I was practically the only one in my starbuck with one when I was in school. Not the case any more. I refuse to pay more for the name is compromise with less hardware specs, features and compatibility.
I go with Samsung these days because
1.) Parts.
they make almost all of their parts which means they can get competitive on part prices and stuff more bang for your buck inside.
* Samsung is one of the world leader in LED technologies and they are known for their tv lines and they were one of the first company to actually use gorilla glass to protect the screen. Apple? I think they just started to use them but drop it once and you will have spider web all over the screen.
* CPU power, they use exynos cpu which is shown from benchmarks much more faster and efficient then a6 chips from apple. BTW apple will never reveal their specs and you would have to wonder why.
* RAM - I'm getting Samsung Galaxy Note 2 today and it has 2GB of RAM. I'm not even going to mention the screen size.
2.) Pricing.
Apple charges ridiculous amount of money for their name.
3.) Morals.
All companies have immoral code of conduct here and there but apple has been the word hypocrisy itself. Even their name Apple inc and the logo was a copy from Beatles from the 70s.
Yet, they have the audacity to sue everyone for making their phones square, have icons or having a center button. Bottom right crazy.
4.) Limitations
Apple has basically have it's devs by the loins and it's very hard for every day users to actually have the phones the way they want. Google is open source so I do whatever the heck I want.
5.) Bloatwares.
One would need to install itunes, quicktime and what other crap that apple needs you to require to get a full useage of your phone. I also hate the fact that you have to save your credit card info on your phone. (phobia of cellphone data thefts...) I have Samsung Galaxy Necus
One will say that it's innovating but all Iphone has been the same since 4. minus little hardware boosts and Siri.
App market is bigger on apple but who uses all of those apps? Even on andriod, you would find everything you will find on apple market and on most occasions, cheaper then the apple market.

It's a little difficult to get use to the 8, but it always is when you switch versions. You can download an App to give you the start menu back. I haven't downloaded it because I'm not downloading anything on is computer as it is the business computer. When I load it onto the other computers, I will be trying that App.
I've owned about every main computer brand there is and have even made a couple of my own. They're all great at times and they've all sucked at times. Ive cursed at every single one of them at at some point.

Well, I went with a Dell laptop which is pretty nicely loaded with hardware. It will be arriving today so I'll be giving W8 a go.
I'm wondering if the "dislike" win8 folks are using one of the win8 mice? Seems like that might be needed to ease more comfortably into the new OS.

I have heard nothing but bad about 8.
They fired the head of windows within a week of the product rolling out. I don't know about you, but that makes me a little leery about it. It is a tablet OS that they are trying to push on to desktops to keep costs down. One more thing they are trying to get you to change so the large companies make more $$.
Check out the Google search.

I recently bought 4 new PC's for work and demanded that they come with Win7.
But this is for work and not personal use. I do 90% of my pc time at work so that is big for me. If I were to get a windows tablet, I am sure that I would be more open to 8, or one of those laptop/tablet hybrids. The missing "start" button is the biggest complaint I have read about, but there are apps for that. I donno, to me a desktop/laptop should be different from a tablet or phone as far as the "feel" goes. Maybe thats just me??

Well, I thought what we used to think of as the desktop, is actually now the "start button". So why is the start button featured on previous OS so missed?

It a transitional thing. You got complaints when you went from Windows 2000 to Windows 95. Then it was Vista. Then it was XP. Then it was Window 7. Now it Windows 8. There's always been a learning curve with a new OS that someone will have difficulty adjusting to. I haven't played with 8 yet, but the people I've spoken to that have say that there's this adjustment on how you find and get your apps started on Windows 8 as opposed to previous versions that had the "Start" button. One guy I work with says all you have to do is "sweep" the main Windows 8 Icon Page either left or right, and the normal Windows desktop would be visible with the elusive Start button. Guess I need to hit Best Buy and see what all the commotion is about.

Well, it arrived, so I'll know for myself imminently!
Poor Best Buy. They should start charging a service fee for all the "check things out" folks. I'm guilty. I went there to check out laptops, which is where I discovered the dell and then bought it at considerably reduced rates on Black Friday at Dell.com.

And that's where the demise of Big Box stores begins. It's not just Best Buy, but Walmart, Target, and virtually every other store you have at your local mall or shopping center. I've been doing this type of shopping for years. What sucks is these same corporations are influencing the government to force all these "Internet stores" to start charging local sales tax on any internet purchase. Amazon started doing it back in July, and it looks like more and more online stores will be doing the same. I usually compare my purchase with what the cost of shipping the item would be, to the amount of taxes I'd pay if I bought it locally, and purchase whichever is cheaper.
We're having a rash of thefts right now during the hoiliday season whereby people are casing neighborhoods looking for packages that are being left on doorsteps by UPS or FedEx. They follow the trucks around, and if they see a package dropped off and not picked up within an hour, they run up to the door, grab the package, run back to their car and drive off.

I've been cranky since I had to give up DOS 3.2. Simple, elegant, "edlin is your friend". Save the resources for applications. I am about to go through my 4th "upgrade" in ERP systems at work and find the old COBOL system of yore to be more robust, more flexible than the crap out there now comprised of modules developed by different groups who never talk to each other.
I guess I'm showing my age, but the "dumbed down" OS these days really cuts down on productivity. I have Win7 on this laptop and on my workstation at work. Despise it, much prefer XP Pro. I argue with it way too much, "No! that is NOT what I meant!" "I said exactly what I meant, just DO IT YOU PRICK!" Same thing with applications. I can fly in Excel a few versions ago but argue way too much with the current. The current version tries to "help" me too much.

And this is why we're always afraid to ship anything over $500 in the mail, especially when the buyer doesn't want signature confirmation or post office pick up?!!

What ERP systems are you looking at? We implemented Epicor about a year and a half ago and have been pretty happy with it. We were running Macola and looked at Mas90, Mas200, Navision and MS Dynamics. We're not big enough for Oracle or SAP...

At my last company (left last March after almost 30 years) we used Epicor Vantage (after ProfitKey, after DataCatcher). We implemented in '07. After several "upgrades" that fixed few things and broke others, I found it pretty good, but this is the system I had in mind when I said "developed by groups that never talked to each other".
At my new company we use Navision, the worst piece of crap I have ever seen. "DOS with a GUI" that makes me long for the COBOL days. We plan to go to Syteline in Feb and I cannot contain my anticipation.
I've seen Mas90, didn't think that much of it, never looked at Macola.
Congrats on Epicor, if you look under the hood and tweak it a bit, its pretty sweet. Do you have a good IT puke who can run service connect? There are a lot of custom reports available if you can punch the right buttons.
Since you bought it 1 1/2 years ago, I'm guessing you have version 8.04.xx. We had 8.03. I heard 8.04 fixed a lot of broken links etc.
If you are running 8.03 then:
BE ADVISED!
The "Customer Part" table does not update with changes in the "Part Maintenance" table. If customer items go through revisions to descriptions often, you will need to blow away the "Customer Part" data on a regular basis or your shipping docs will show prior revision descriptions. I never understood why tables did not link to Part Maintenance (thats what Part Maintenance is for, right?) and never saw a real need for the redundant "Customer Part" table. There are several quirks in Epicor Vantage, but if you are aware of them, you will be OK.

I just read the entire thread, because I also was in the market for a new PC
Bionicarm: I'm glad for my big mean dogs more and more, I can't imagine someone taking a package off my doorstep.
UPS insisting the package was delivered and the way they won't take any responsibility would worry me to tears. I just know it would be a total loss and a complete nightmare.
I just purchased a laptop last night (on-line) I went with Dell and a docking station so I can use it as a desktop when I want to look at a bigger screen, use a wireless mouse and my back lit full keyboard...I went with Windows 7, there is an upgrade to win8...but I don't think I will try it.
LOL, for the record...I hate apple anything. My touch screen is a Xoom 10.1 and I use the Electrify smart phone, both are Motorola brands...and I like Android, but for a PC, Microsoft all the way!

I didn't see any Win7 systems available at Dell after the 8 launch. Which system did you get?
My new laptop had a bad pixel so I called dell naturally. They said they'd switch out the screen, which I was not happy about because this is a new system. I asked to switch for another laptop, but tech support said that was not possible. Knowing that "repairs" usually entails refurbished parts, I specially asked, "Would the new screen be 'new' and not refurbished?" "Yes, it will be new," said the guy from India.
Ok, tech guy showed up took my new machine apart in order to replace this screen. Pulled out the replacement screen which was clearly marked "refurbished". I let the guy do his work, and as soon as he left I called Dell, this time with an attitude. The new machine will be arriving Monday and this one will be going back.
That all said, this machine is pretty awesome. I've gotten accustomed to Win8, but I'm sure there is a lot more to learn. I have not actually used it for productivity purposes, so it may be that 8 is not as useful in that area as were its predators. I can see that Win8 can be considered "more fun", especially if you use smartphones and tablets that also have this OS. You can sync all that together so that stuff on your home pc can be picked up on your mobile devises and the customizations you make can all sync together for all your devises. That is pretty neat.
I've discontinued my Comcast TV acct recently due to only watching a couple of channels and paying over $100 for that. The new Intel systems have WIDI so I plan to now use the laptop to wirelessly use my TV for entertainment rather than overpriced cable.

Good to hear Dell made good after they got caught. Good on you for being observant and standing your ground. I look forward to your continued review of Win8.
