i'm only 14, but have so many pets, my parents refuse to pay anything but the electric bill, so I have been looking for a new job, and i've discovered something i can do!, I am going to be a Lifeguard, my first lessons are tonight, i have to go through 70 hours of training including recovereing things from the bottom of the pool, swimming time trials, and learning C.P.R... the lessons are $175, so my parents gave me an early B-day present and payed for it, these lessons are friggin intense.. We have to dive to the bottom of the pool (14 ft.), and collect cinder blocks and bricks.. depending on how fast we can swim, and how many cinderblocks/ bricks we bring back determines our score, and those with the highest score get a job.., i've been on a swim team for the last 3 years, and i hope thats enough preparation, the job pays $7 an hour.. may not seem like much, but hey.. you gotta start somewhere. so anyways, wish me luck., I'll be back in about 5 hours to tell you guys how it goes..

Lifeguards here make 10$ an hour off the books. Hell K-mart pays 7.75 to start and theres no training required. Most of the staff spends half the day taking cigarette breaks. Good luck with the training but look around. Alot of town parks or pools will offer good money. I know one girl who makes 12 an hour but I'm pretty sure that was "negotiated".

Sounds like it will be fun; good luck!
My fiance's brother is in the army, and he suggested that I learn to be a lifeguard and go to work in Iraq for $75,000 a year...I said no thanks.

alright!, i am in a class of 8, and last night was the prerequisites (tests), we had to swim 100 yards freestyle, 100 yards

[hr]
stroke, then 100 and choose what you want to swim (freestyle or

[hr]
), and we had to swim that 300 within 7 minutes., then swim a 100 freestyle, and recover a 10 lb brick from 14ft. under water, then dive off the high-dive. me and 5 others passed.. the others don't get to take the lesons, and lost their $175.
and yes, i can't work at stores because i'm only 14..and $7 to start, once i work in my community pool, i will later move to the rec-center, and i will get $1 more for experience, so i'm up to $8, and when teaching lessons i get an extra $1, meaning i can get $9 an hour by fall., all is going well, and i have more lessons tomorrow night, i hope it all goes well...

30,
You and only 5 others passed??!! That's awesome for you!!
7 bucks an hour is good for a first job and when you get experience (as a lifeguard, not as a swimmer) then you can go for the higher paying jobs, but as it stands it's good.
Your parents gave you 175 bucks...That's awesome.
Keep us posted. Oh and expect the taxes. They suck, but when I got my first check, I almost had a heart attack. Who the heck IS FICA anyway!!??
LOL
Yup, keep us posted.

you could also get a paper route. its great excercise either riding your bike or walking, depending on the route. i had 3 blocks, and made a TON in tips. although, the paper now requires people to send in payment instead of the paper deliverer going around collecting money...

i have a paper route, and yes, i don't collect, so no tips, and my mom drives me around while i throw my papers out the window, but its only like.. $40-50 a month, and thats not enough unfortunatly.. so this is the alternative,
and omg theres so much homework.. tonight i had to read 40 pages of the red cross lifeguard handbook, and do 17 pages of homework.. sheesh, i didn't know this would involve this much work.

Just wait until you get to practice all the rescues! Then you get to hold your breath forever. I used to lifeguard, same pay as you until I turned 18 then it jumped to $9 but I did it at the school pool so it was very laidback. Interesting that you guys have the same deal with losing your money if you don't pass the entrance test. Our group was completely straight off the swim team except for one older woman who didn't bring goggles so she couldn't swim the 500, she just left, $180 poorer.

yea, one of the pre-requisites was you had to hold your breath for at least 1 minute, and i was watching "man vs. wild", and he said to breathe for 5 minutes straight breathe as deep as ytou can, and i did it, and when i went up i got 1 minute 52 seconds, longest in the class., and I've been on the swim team for the last 3 years, so it was nice practice., and let's hope this job gets me a new girlfriend.. just broke up with my last bout a week ago, and now that i'll actually have an income.. i can finally afford a new one
, i hope i have enuff money after buying her useless crap to afford my pets tho  , well i have to go do my lifeguard homework, all 17 pages of true and false, fill in the blank, multiple choice and short answer.. its alot.. wish me luck tonight, we're working on entries, and unsubmerged rescues., see you all in about 6 hours!
