Wolf Eel/Carpet Blenny

The LFS tried to get me to purchase a Wolf Eel. According to their Coding, they say the Wolf Eel is "Reef Safe." He is eating Shrimp Pellets, so as long as they have had him, he has not been eating any live food. Wolf Eels are very active, or at least the one they have is, but it is truly reef safe?

i guess it would be reef safe in as much as it wouldnt bother your corals, but it will eat other fish, and shrimp and they tend to get more aggressive as they grow. The wolf eel is not an eel, it is actually in the blenny family. I had one in my aggressive tank, and I would never put one in a reef.

Thank You! I have had luck with snowflake morrays in the reef tank (keep him well feed and leaves the my shrimps and crabs alone) However, the Wolf Eel, while fun to watch, thought it was odd that they would recommand it for my reef tank

Wolf eels are actually in the Dottyback family.
Hammerhed7, they wont bother corals. But they will deffinetly eat small fish and inverts..Unlike true morays wolf eels have exelent vision.so they can deffinetly catch small fish easier

Thats interesting.. I the book that I had also called them a carpet blenny, so I just assumed they were in the Blenny Family.... Always learn something everyday. Also knowthat Wolf Eel, tend to play dead alot to catch food. When the fish come over to investigate, he comes to life and has himself a meal.

they are a blenny, and i guess you could call them reef safe, that is if you didn't want anything else in the tank, or were doing a predator reef

I'm sorry to burst your bubble hammerhed7 but in reality the Green Wolf Eel is a Pseudochromid
their commen name implies that they are a blenny because of their long fins and elongated body...but they are truly Pseudochromids
If you go to Wetwebmedia.com you can find the correct information about them....You can find them in the Pseudochromid section
