I will filter and skim the majority out and the cuc will get the rest just like what happens with a sand bed.

Alright, but you cannot keep a full clean up crew. You can keep certain snails that only eat algae and certain crabs. You are really limiting yourself here. You will have to vacuum detritus. Nothing is going to consume that without a sand bed. That is going to be difficult with rock in there. Best of luck to you with this.

I'm not set in stone at this point but this is my plan. I actually have a friend with a bare bottom reef that does really well. As far as the detritus goes there will be very little as I plan to do pretty much reef only with a couple of clowns, and maybe one other fish. This will not be a heavily stocked tank. My friend actually is have good succes with there tank and in my opinion it is way overstocked.

Well, I sincerely hope that it works out well for you then. Without a bunch of fish it should be just fine. Post some pictures once it is going well

good luck with the tank, sometimes i wish i would have gone bare bottom, i dont have the right kind of tank for it though( corner bowfront) i would have way too much glass showing on the bottom.

For all of you the bare bottom option after about 2 months does not show the glass that is not covered with rocks as it starts to cover with coralline.
Here is a picture of mine.

I figure after some time it will be completely covered with varying shades of different colored coralline.
