THANKS SO MUCH for the offer That is beyond kind of you. But we are are OK right now. Where are you guys located??? I thought the same thing. Much too good to be true. But I think we are OK for now. If the ice had NOT melted, we would be in a world of hurt because of the ice and now cold. Our trees would have finally given in. They were "creaking and moaning" on Saturday night/Sunday am.
Does anyone know of a battery operated heater??? Our neigbor has a battery opperated pump (which we would normally borrow, but they were in the same boat). If it is out there, I think its worth the investment.

as an aborist.............may I ask you about our Oak Tree. The last few years everyone around us as gotten Gaal. (spelling) That was our fear with this tree. It creaked and moaned under the ice, but it prevailed. We are going to have someone "dead wood" it and get rid of the branches that broke and fell into the heigthed of the tree. What do you think is the best fix for gaal? We have some deep root fertilizer spikes that we did last fall..............but not sure if that will work???
Any adice would be appreciated.

do you mean common oak gall? by dead wood do you mean remove the dead and unhealthy branches? sorry there is a lot of different lingo between arborists from state to state, i find when i go on "missions", which im going to be doing soon, it is sometimes like the local arborists speak a diff language.
i find a lot of older oaks creak a lot and it is mostly normal but hard to say without actually seeing the tree. fertilizer spikes work really well i use them often. they will make the tree healthier and much stronger. its hard to just notice the difference right away but if you took pictures from when you used them and probaby about a year from then you should be able to tell the difference. if not you might have a more serious disease but if you had an arborist come out and say its gall it probably is and id take there advice. i would even call a large well respected local tree company and a lot of time you can just talk to an aborist and see what they have to say, like i said its hard to tell what the problem is without actually being there.

I feel so sorry for you all. At least when we get hit with hurricanes, it's warm. We live in the country and lose our power frequently so we had a generator. Unfortunetly, someone cut the chain on it last month and stole it. I feel very vulnerable without it. Most people around here have installed whole house systems, but they our very expensive.

Progress is being made. But it's slow. Still approximately 23,000 homes in the springfield area without power. There have been a few deaths from various causes. Carbon monoxide poisoning being one of them. there a reprts of fires. This morning a person who was bed ridden (sp?) was rescued from a burning home. The thaw should begin tomorrow as is predicted above 32 degrees temperatues are expected. Clean up crews including the gaurd have made some good progress.
. However, Beth has it about right, hurricane is still what it looks like. There predicting months for the debris clean up. Trees, poles and lines are still snapping. You never know when ones gonna come down. there are several factors that hamper the recovery process on restoring power. Ice covered roofs, limbs to climb over or cut out, debris all over the place. I still cant seem to believe the massive amounts of limbs and cables. I cannot even answer my cell phone because of the sheer numbers of calls. The voices are all the same, desperate, determined and hopeful. Thumbs up to the city of springfield for the efforts they've made to relieve the red tape process for us independant electricians trying to help relieve the situation. I cant say they could have done a better job.
My electrical supply house has really been excellent in their efforts also. Their selling materials without power themselves. Shipping material in from anywhere they can.Electrical materials are again begining to run out. Reports of 10 generators stolen from R.R. crossings. :scared: Crews are coming from 4 surrounding states and also from states as far away as S. Carolina. All in all though I believe we are going to see a success story here, no crying, whining and blaming yet, at least I've not seen it. However the forecast has another 2 to 5 inches of snow in the forecast for this weekend.

Yeah, check out accuweather. I was watching the storm yesterday and today it doubled in size! :scared: I hope that it is only 5 to 8 inches, it appears to be moving at a good pace. CU said that the snow will not slow them down but the wind gusts that might bring down more branches will.

Well the weathers all goofed up now. It started snowing today around noon. Then turned to rain, then again freezing rain and now sleet. It gonna come down all night and were under a winter weather warning until 9 am tomorrow. Progress is still slow. CU (the electric company for the springfield area) stated that they have approximatley 120,000 homes under their jurisdiction, and at one time 75,000 of them were without power. Realize that this is only a part of the affected area.:scared: Transformers are still blowing up, yesterday we got a little thaw and windsheilds all over the city were busted from the falling ice. We are wearing our hardhats when working under trees now. Getting soaking wet while freezing our hineys off, using a generator and 500 watt halogen work lights to work as much around the clock as possible. Scubaguy, you be careful out there! It's gonna get slick!
BTW Day 8 today.
