The reason, IMO, that people get so upset about tangs being kept in a smaller tank is the same reason people get upset over moorish idols, blue ribbon eels and blue spotted stingrays being kept in smaller tanks. These are delicate fish and will get stressed, get sick and die if not kept properly. On the other hand, keeping triggers, lionfish, groupers, damsels, etc in smaller tanks does not invoke the same passion because they will probably survive in less than ideal conditions.

I totally understand caring about the delicate fish. People just get so worked up no matter which side they choose, and it seems only on this topic. I don't want to start a new debate, I'll just always be neutral to the whole thing - I don't believe in fighting.

The two spots of the trade that are hot issues are tangs and dragonets. and if they are in a tank that a member considers inadequate to its survival then tempers flare. But i've been in more arguements about the later of those two.... and I've noticed that teh 'prettier' fish are the ones that most care about. Put a Mandarin in a smaller tank, your a horrible person, put a scooter dragonet in a smaller tank, who cares? I've seen tangs live for years in smaller tank, healthy? maybe not, but they didnt NEED huge tanks. and when i say smaller, i mean 50ish. but due to its length the tang wont have the necessary room to swim. but if a tank doesnt have enough algae to support a lmb then it gets little heat. or if a tank hasnt the sufficient light for a clam, little more, but not tang comparable heat over it. whats the point of this post? idk... each fish is an individual but you should have CLOSE to ideal conditions at least for it in any case.
