if either one of those pumps fails or out pumps the other you will have a MAJOR problem on your hands, use and overflow to get water to the sump....and your gonna be cleaning the sponges often , might be more work then good.

Yeah, no need to get a second pump when you can just let gravity do all the work. Safer too.

or what if i had the outlet tube high up in the tank so if the inlet pump failed it would stop pumping water. or vise versa

the problem with having 2 pumps, is that you can never exactly match their GPH, and you will end up sucking either your tank, or sump dry. get a Pre Filter, (also called an overflow) thats what they are ment for.

yes but that style is not so popular any more. you want to find a U tube design there more reliable

I have an overflow similar to the one (in #15) on my fifty gallon and it works super. It's kind of a pain getting the siphon started, but once it is, you never have to worry about messes or anything. You'll never lose the siphon once set up. I took the sponges out of mine so I don't have the constant maintenance. Let the skimmer do the work of the sponges.
