would this work for a DIY sump?

ok, just wondering, would a bio wheel filter pump work for a return? if you had a under stand sump, and took pvc and hooked it up where the water comes in for the filter, then put it into the sump, could it pull water up and just flow it out of the filter? the filter puts out 360 gph, just wanted everyones thoughts on this before i tryed it, having trouble understanding how to set up a sump too. im planing on using a rubbermade tub, around 15g, but dont understand the plumbing much, like over flow and all that, i dont want to flood our house and drain the fish, any help anyone can offer to break this down for me to understand would be very nice, TIA

im guessing more than likely your using a pump from a hang on filter if so remember that almost all hang on filter pumps ARE NOT SUBMERSIBLE. But more than likely the pump will not be able to pump out the head pressure that your wanting given the circumstances that your return would be around 4 feet. And i thank your on the right track about using the pvc to pull the water out of your sump and not submersing the pump but then pump priming becomes a factor the best thing that ive used is a rio powerhead and remember that you need to circulate your tank at least 3 times per hour.
 
yea i understand you cant put a hang-on filter pump underwater, what im saying is, if i took pipe and instead of the hang on going into the tank to pull water out (which it goes about 2 feet down into the tank) i would make the pipe go around the side of the hang on, and down under the stand to a sump. the hang on puts out 360gph at about 1 3/4', to 2', so would it work for pulling water from 4' but at less gph? the water would then go into the hang on and past the bio wheels. ive seen a few sumps and can filters that have a hang on part with bio wheels, so before i go cutting my hang on up, does anyone know if this would work?

I dont think it would be able to push the water up that high. They are designed for 0' of head pressure.
