Would this work?

This is what I had planned for my 72g FO aquarium:
1.5" clown trigger
small snowflake eel
3-4" dogface puffer or 3" blue-spotted grouper(I know they get huge...i'd only keep him til he was about 8")
I've heard puffers don't get along with triggers but if i put the puffer in first and he was twice the size, would it work?

never mix puffers and triggers, no matter the size. if the blue dot grouper you are referring to is Cephalopholis argus, it wont get huge, only around 14-16". do you plan on keeping the clown in there his whole life. im really not sure of the dimensions of a 72, i assume it is close to the 48x18x20 of a 75. im sure you know a clown will also get to large for that tank, but you could keep him in there for a good while if he is only 1.5" you could maybe get away with that grouper in there his whole life because they dont move around too much. you could sub the puffer or clown (which ever you dont want as much since they cant mix) for a nice lunare wrasse, lionfish, hogfish, etc. goood luck, bo

Does anyone know anything at all about a blue-line grouper? From a picture I saw, they're awesome looking.

blue lines are about the exact same as the blue dot except they have stripes, and dont grow as big. i first started a predator tank because i saw a blue line at my lfs. unfortunatley, the blue line was sold as an accident by a new worker, when he was being held for me :( . you could keep a blue line in your tank for its whole life if you only had one more fish in there, they grow b/w 12-14". an awesome fish to say the least. hth, bo

I've never seen one in any of my LFS, but I have seen them on one online site for anywhere from 20 bucks for a small one to 40 for a large one. If you want the site, email me.
GROUPERHEAD, what do you know about blue-spotted groupers? Can they survive with triggers?

the one at my lfs was 40 bucks for an 8"er. craig, a blue dot should be fine with triggers. they get pretty large and stay mostly to themselves. they will usually stay around the bottom of the tank laying around in the rockwork. a trigger and grouper should do fine together. i would just suggest getting the grouper first, and getting a larger grouper than trigger, then everything should be ok. the only problem i ever had with my grouper and trigger was the trigger usually ate all the food before the grouper could get some. what i did was try to feed at night, and i would drop some food on one end of the tank, the trigger would rush over there, then i would put some on the other end for the grouper. hth, bo
if you have anymore q's you can email me bo2442@aol.com

i disagree with grouperhead, i think you can miz puffers and triggers u just cant moix puffers with other puffers, i dunno where he got the idea of puffers and triggers dont mix.

Well In most cases I agree with both of you, but a friend of mine does have a 125G with the following huma trigger, porc puffer, dogface puffer, fiji puffer, and a clown trigger, the fish are starting to get big and he's having a 300G being built right now, he claims he never has had any problems..but I wouldn't try it :)

Well here we go again about Puffs and Triggers. I have to again say that in most cases a Puff with a Trigger is a mistake. Unless the Trigger is very mellow or the Puff much larger in time they will get into it. Again I will tell you that I have seen 2 Porks brought to my lfs (different owners) both attacked by their Trigger tankmates and both with almost no fins left on them. Both Porks died within a day or two and the owners only brought them in because they didn't have the courage to do the right thing considering the condition of both the Porks when I saw them. Yes once in a while it works but if you are like me with my luck you will be one it does not work for. Another point I will mention is that I once asked the curator of fish at the Shedd aquaruim in Chgo (I am a member there) about why in their 90000 gallon foyer tank there is a large Pork among the fish but no Triggers that I could see and he responded that even a tank that big would not be big enough for those 2 if they were the same size. Now saying all this I will state that I am not familiar with all the various Triggers out there beyond the Clown, Queen, Niger, Picaaso, and Pink Tailed so I suppose that with all the ones I have seen listed there is some that would be possible to keep with a Puffer, but I would not want to chance itself myself. As far as Puffs with Puffs I agree no and especially Porks with Dogs. As many of you know I have a pair of Porks since 1994 but got them strictly by luck and raised them with each other and it has worked only because they are a pair.
