It seems to me he had a pro set up his tank, thus no problems, If that thing was going to go down in flames it would have already done it. I don't know why everyone assumes this guy would spend thousands on eqipment and rock and then fill it with tap water put in some table salt and toss in a few pets from the local store and then post a picture here for you. Since he has very little experience with the tank I am sure he bought it somewhere and they set it up and used water that was ready corals and fish ect. Not everybody does this the same way. Some ways are expensive but quick, with ls and lr and clean water you can set up a tank in a days without a problem. That is a good looking tank and a great set-up and he is off to a good start.

Excactly right, Thats what I had first stated,
also what I tried to do is set up with the best equipment,
but knowlege and experience is something I have to learn,
Im not trying to rush it all, day 12 all is well,

In my first reply to this topic, I stated that the only way a pro could have pulled this off is if all was if everything was established beforhand. I think this is the case. As stated by other people the set up is professionally done, and it is a nice system.
There were just words of caution because some people have been taken advantage of by so called professionals. Luckily, this does not seem to be the case. We all try to help in our own way, and throwing up caution signs can not hurt. I think that some people learned a lesson in this. There are people that do this professionally, but we need to use caution and research the issues and the people that take care of tank.
My hat is off to this professional, I think he did a wonderfull job. I wish I had the skills this guy has.
Hey Plum, I hope you enjoy your tank!!! Good luck!

I'll echo your Wow! When I saw your first post I thought, who in the world would put together a system like that and not fully understand the basics of SW/reef keeping. Obviously you've got some great professional support and I admire your financial dedication to make it work. Now as you take that same level of dedication to learn what makes it all work you'll enjoy this hobby even more.
You've come to the right place and please keep asking those questions. The guys/gals here can be a bit tough at times but I'm convinced their motivations are honorable. Kinda like the drill sergeant bustin' your chops so you survive the war.
Good Luck and A Great Looking Tank:)

How did your tank turn out a month later? I'm curious to know. I'm in the same situation right now. I hired a professional in the area to get me started. I have a 220 gallon tank, and he set me up with an ecosystem sump and MH lights, live sand, lr, etc. We had the tank built in with the house and he set it up a few weeks before we moved in, and he said it would be cycled and ready before we moved in. I was really surprised by that, because in my last experience, cycling took 4 - 6 weeks. He actually cured the LR really well before it went into our tank. We purchased it about 2 months before we put it in the tank. He put the tank and water in about 6 weeks ago, and he put live corals and clean up crew in 2 weeks ago. Everything is going great. No losses, and my sump is filled with life, as well as my lr. All corals are doing very well, I only lost 2 feathers, who were trying to move out of the light, and they basically comitted suicide. By the time I figured that out, it was too late. So, anyway, I'm hoping that all is going well, and that I won't have any unpleasant surprises. BTW, please don't offend or humiliate me with responses about not knowing what I'm doing. Often times I hear those responses when people are asking questions on the board. I don't claim to know everything, and I am relying on my lfs guy, who has been invovled extensively in marine aquariums for 30 years. I've come to trust him, and he has not proven me wrong yet. My husband and I had a DIY reef system 15 years ago, and when we moved, our 125 tank cracked and we didn't have the money to replace it, so we let the hobby go. So much has changed since then, and I'm trying to get caught up. I've never lost my love for the reef, and waited until we could afford to do it again, and do it right. This is and has been an exciting hobby for me, and I'm enjoying this board so much. I've already learned a lot, much of which has confirmed that my set up is good, and the tank is very healthy, so far..........

OK...you're not that bad, just don't laugh at me if you think I really blew it! Actually, I think it's still going well, that's why I was hoping to hear from plum70rt because it's been about a month since he posted on his 10 day old tank. I am hoping that if there were any problems, I could be made aware of them. Anyway, my tank seems to be doing good so far.
I plan on keeping this a reef tank. So far here's the equipment.
220 Gal. w60" x d24" x h36"
ecosystem filter with LS & Calurpa started
AS 2100 pump
2 400W MH
2 AGA overflows
150# live rock with calurpa
100# base rock
looks like he used some carbon or charcoal??
Let it cycle for about 2 weeks, then added:
Toad Leather
Mumps Leather (has been droopy, but perking up)
Yellow (?) Leather
Colt
Brain coral
another coral (don't know name)
3 feather dusters (2 of one type-both dead-1 of another-doing fine)
5 chromses (2 found their way to the overflow)
1 sand sifting star
1 Zebra Tang
Then added the next week, a clean up crew
mix of 25 different crabs and snails
2 emerald crabs
sally light foot
and yesterday added
1 pulsing xania
1 brain coral
purple mushroom
calcium additive
trace element additive
(Mumps leather really perked up afater that)
My guy is coming once per week to check everything, so far so good. We had the brown algae bloom, right on schedule, which lasted just a few days, and the snails have pretty much cleaned that up. I'm having Jeff come in once a week to help with the tank, and also help educate me more before I'm left on my own. We also had the tank built into a wall, and added a drain valve right to the tank, and RO water sink under the tank too, so water chenges should be pretty easy. We will be doing our first change next week.
