wrasse's

I have never kept a wrasse, and am considering it in my 125 aggressive. Is this tank big enough? I have seen them in stores, good size ones, and they seem to hide alot. This makes me wonder if it will have too much food competition in my tank. I have 2 big puffers(porc and stars stripes), and a zebra eel. Will a wrasse be ok in my tank, I feel the need for one more inhabitant...

There aren't too many wrasses that would be too big for a 125. I don't think it would be too stressed to find food. I would reccommend a lunare wrasse or a harlequin tusk. I have a lunare wrasse in a 75 with a huma trigger and it swim right in front of the glass all day long and makes the huma compete for food. It is pretty aggressive and kinda bosses around the slightly smaller huma. HTH, Craig

I agree with Craig, pretty much any wrasse should be ok. I would get a male paddlefin wrasse, they are one of my favorite wrasse's.

I'd get a Klunzinger if you can find one. They max out at about 8-9" and are gorgeous. Mine was super aggressive--right up until the time he got eaten by my tesselata.

I had a lunare wrasse with a lionfish, and a huma huma in my 125g and it was one of the coolest fish I ever had. I sold the lunare and the huma huma(lion died) so I could combine that one and my invert tank. My girlfriend and I are moving to Florida for grad. school and have plans to get a BIG aggressive tank and the first purchase will be a lunare wrasse.
Our old one "Willow" the wrasse (yeah, my giirlfriend has a VIVID imagination) never stopped moving except when he would sleep in a huge south pacific conche shell.
I would suggest looking into ones that are shaped and patterned similar to the lunare like the sunset wrasse (I believe it is called that, it looks like the lunare but with the green substituted for yellow).

thanks for the suggestions. I have 3 large hermits in my tank, and my 2 big puffers leave them alone, will the wrasse hurt them??

My lunare never messed with the hermits. keep him well fed and there should not be problem. If you have hermits the size of a golf ball(aka large) I am pretty sure the lunare would not bother them, the hermits can defend themselves and I bet the fish would learn a quick lesson

My lunare is great. He doesn't mess with my hermit and he never stops swimming. He's very agressive and when adding new fish I need to do it after he's gone to bed, but that's the only problem I've ever had with him. He also helps by sweeping the sandbed and getting any leftover food off the bottom so that the other fish can eat it easier.

The wrasse is a great addition to any tank...they swim around all day and its a thrill to watch....I do suggest getting the tusk or lunare...or something that's more aggressive. Also make sure you keep the nitrates down or they'll start fighting with all your other fish.
that's how ma wrasse died...powderblue killed it
