Did they ever fix the problems they had with x box 360s and their 3 rings of death and stuff? Like if I buy one now, have the addressed the early issue.

Yea, I believe the build date you want to look for is something after June/July 2007. The design was improved then? IIRC? So any of the new ones or like the Elite (those black ones?) or Halo special editions should all be good to go.

9 times out of 10 the Red Ring was from the machine being on too long of session... all it took was about 2 hours of patience to let the machine and powerplant on the chord to cool... mine still does the Red Ring like once a month... unplug it let it sit and its game on!!!
otherwise yes the problem has been fixed...

we had a cooler on ours and got the red ring of death. we had it maybe 3 months and hardly played it. when we turned it on one day there it was and it wouldnt turn off unless we unplugged it. they said ours was completely internal and shipped us a new one. i definetly agree that if you buy one now your safe. and if not you have up to a year i think if something like that happens.

lol, you mean playing it too long? That is a serious problem. I'd play it to long and plan on using it as an hd dvd player too. Real issue.

ive never heard of extended use being connected to red rings of death. most of the people i know that got it had it the first time they turned it on, but you can still get it after if you have it connected to the net. me and my friends have played on mine for at least six hours at a time and theres never been a problem. btw, i dont have a chiller, but it is in my basement that averages 55-60 degrees.

So the xbox can only playback dvd's in 480p?
Get an elite or a premium with the HDMI. Those models can upscale dvd's. Also look on the box before you buy look for the little white sticker and look to see how many watts the power cable is. I cant remember exactly what its supposed to be but something like 180 is the good ones with the falcon chip, the 230 watt ones are the bad ones. But there not all bad I have owned 3 360's since launch in Nov of '05 and have never once had the 3 red lights. And I ran the things 24/7 with the HD/DVD player aswell, I hope that helps.
Oh yeah dont put an intercooler on it, it will also cause the red lights because it draws power from the xbox, just keep it well ventilated and you will be fine. Keep it off a rug and dont put it in an entertainment center all closed in.

So I've been reading for hd dvd you needed basically an external dvd reader that plugged into the xbox? Dang it why do I have to be hooked on halo.

To play hd-dvds which by the way is a dead format, you would need to buy the hd-dvd player add-on which now is $50 brand new, im sure you could find a better deal than that if you looked or didnt mind buying used. And yes its external and plugs in to the 360 I believe it also works on PC's but I never tried it so cant say for sure.

well, I originally thought that to play a movie in 1080p that the xbox 360 was internally equipt with the hd dvd reader. Now I'm seeing that it required buying basically an external hd dvd reader. It seems like there is no plan for an internal blue ray setup. So I'm annoyed.

If you dont mind me asking why do you want a HD-DVD player? Its a dead format, if your just looking into upscaling dvd's an xbox 360 with the hdmi output will work, you may have to go online with it to download the latest update but it will do it. I dont have a 1080p TV but it upscaled to 720p perfectly for me.

maybe I should be more specific, I want a 1080p dvd player. And was originally hoping to kill two birds with one stone. But that does not seem to be the case anymore.

A regular dvd will only look so good even upscaled its not really HD, close but not really. Blu-ray players are really nice but real expensive. I have been hearing that down the road M$ is going to have a blu-ray add-on for the 360 but that hasn't ever been confirmed. If all your looking to do is play Halo and upscale dvd's a 360 would be good. IDK if the halo editions have the hdmi output or not I think they do but have never had one, but if it does get one go online download the update and your good to go. Just remember you WILL need the hdmi to get 1080p, it will only allow 720p through the component cables. I hope this helps. The 360 really is an awesome piece of equipment you wont be disapointed.

There is a lot of confusion.
Stdreb, the Xbox with a HDMI will upconvert standard DVDs to 1080p. Standard DVDs were never recorded in 1080p, you can't just get 1080p, you have to upconvert the signal somehow. And all that is, is an interpretation by the DVD player of what all the extra pixels "should" be. As mentioned, the quality won't be the same as a true hig-def DVD. Most of those players, including Xbox or a PS3 or a standalone player, can upconvert to 1080p. Some are better then others.

You would have to give up alot more than just halo. A PS3 is definitly a nice blu-ray player for the price but it lacks so much every where else. I have had all three next-gen consoles and the 360 is the best for games definitly, unless your a MGS fan I guess.
