There is a lot of confusion.
Stdreb, the Xbox with a HDMI will upconvert standard DVDs to 1080p. Standard DVDs were never recorded in 1080p, you can't just get 1080p, you have to upconvert the signal somehow. And all that is, is an interpretation by the DVD player of what all the extra pixels "should" be. As mentioned, the quality won't be the same as a true hig-def DVD. Most of those players, including Xbox or a PS3 or a standalone player, can upconvert to 1080p. Some are better then others.
From what I've read from cnet, it doesn't seem that the xbox even upconvert the dvd, they said dvd playback is only capable of 480p (without the now dead hd-dvd external player) (I'm not sure how that is true especially with the new ones that have the hdmi cable) They also said that the hdmi is only capable of dolby digital instead of the THX sound format which is equally dissapointing. I understand that standard dvds are only 720x480. That is why you go out and buy the blue ray. but It does not appear like getting that bunded with a player is going to happen anytime soon. At least blue rays are now under 300 bucks.
