Xenia and star polyps???

I don't know what the problem is with my tank. I cannot stop the xenia from growing. It spreads quicker than weeds but for some reason I cannot keep green star polyps for nothing. I love the color that the star polyps produce and I really want to keep them in my tank. I have had some success with them about a year ago but everything that has grown is now starting to die off again. I have been through this a few times with the star polyps. Any opinions on why this is happening.

My stars died also after about a 5-6 months. Only thing I saw was some type of algea smoothering them. Best I tried to keep it off, it still won. Do you see any algea of sorts on them? Best I got, I am still :notsure: on why this happened to mine.

How is your water quality, especially nitrates? Xenia likes to live in areas of the sea with higher nitrates (e.g. near the discharge from seaside hotels). Most other corals do not like nitrates.

possibly the nitrates are my problem. I have been doing weekly water changes of late because of my nitrates. Most recently they have been at @30ppm. I made the mistake of cleaning my bio balls with frest water and started a cylcle in my tank. I have been battling for about three weeks now and think that its just about over. hopefully now that the nitrates are down the star polyps will open back up. I love the green swaying color in the tank!!

Xenia loves nitrates so your nitrates could definately be contributing to the rapid growth.

i also had a similiar experience as one of the postings above with algae. i had fragged a GSP and one of the frags that i put near the top of the tank started to get covered with algae. none of the other frags or mother colony got algae on it and they all survived. my mother colony has also gone thru times when the nitrates were high too... above 20ppm and they're still doing fine..
