I'm converting one of my refugs to an Xenia refug... anyone running one?? any suggestions?? It's a 20g tank with about 2/3rds allowed for the refug, has a 65w (LOA) 6500k PC.

Thanks Kip. I'm hoping to remove all the macro after the Xenia get essablished. Does a RDP have the same PH benifit as it would with macros??

sorry if this seems like a hi-jack but what do both of you think is better to have in a fuge.......xenia(what type would be best) or macro algae(spaghetti). should i put broken up bits of live rock in the refugium for the xenia to grow onto?

kip,
dont forget about me......in a little while i'll be ready for some xenia.just a reminder
what is a good back up plan? would a maxijet 1200 blowing across the top of them be good for flow or do i need more or less?:joy:

Hey guys, I dont mean to double hi-jack this post either!...but what are the benefits of having a zenia fuge vs. macro fuge? I have pulsing zenia growing like crazy in my disp tank that im getting ready to trim back. I can just move it to my fuge if theres a benefit......thanks for any info & sorry for the hi-jacking.

yt... which is better? xenia removes far more NO3-PO4 per mass than macros...

I need some help too! I have elongated xenias (I think thats what they are called) and they will look good one day and the next day part of it will be dieing.. I add iodine to my tank and I have had the xenia for a while. anyone know how to keep them thriving?? ME

I agree... my Xenia are growing like crazy with no iodine being added except what's provided during water changes.

Kip u have the prittiest looking xenia, i want to get one. i hope it looks as good as urs does. if i fragged the xenia could i keep it in a container in the main tank? like the containers they use at the LFS that hang on the side to hold water while there catching the fish

Kip what kind of xenia are you using is it the pom pom, or does it even matter what type you use? Also can I have mangroves in my refugium with xenia?

u are. i will probly just drill holes and put it at the bottom of the tank instead of on the lining of the top

Cool Idea....Have a big fast growing Xinia fuge to supply your butterflys and possiably have better luck with a moorish idol in the tank above. Every once in awhile just snip alittle off and feed it to the fishes. hmmmm

I figure I'll throw my $.02 in. I don't see how Xenia would have any impact on pH... unless Xenia uses CO2 and respires O2 in amounts I am unaware of. I have seen some information on how much nitrate Xenia can sequester, but it is very comparable to some types of macros such as Sargassum and Prolifera (although does outdue most other macros). I have also never seen any info showing that Xenia sequesters any more PO4 than most other corals. So unless the Xenia is growing as fast as macro algae then I find it hard to believe. Although one great benefit to Xenia is not having to worry about it releasing spores. Correct me if I am wrong... It's been awhile since I have checked for any new research on nutrient export.

i have been running xenia in tanks for nearly a year... and it basically, by itself, cleaned up a crashed, nasty tank... that had a fuge with macros... that wasnt putting a dent in the algae problem
xenia does outgrow many other corals... and as you prune it.. you are exporting NO3-PO4...thats the difference... nobody is pruning and throwing out hammers as far as i know

Yeah.... But Xenia uses much less CO2 than macros. There is no way the microscopic zooxanthellae uses nearly as much CO2 as macros. Otherwise all corals would help stabilize pH alot.
I assume the macros went sexual? What kind of macro was it?
Yes... exactly. Xenia is good at nutrient export. But do you really think it grows as fast as algae?

will the xenia release the no3 and po4 back into the tank when pruned or you are getting rid of the no3 and po4. also kip...........if you frag a stalk and have a little stub left over how can you get rid of the stalk that will soon grow a new head?can this be done in the tank?
