the DSB creates low oxygen zones where anaerobic bacteria can grow. these bacterias will complete the niotrogen cycle by converting nitrates into nitrogen gas which bubbles out of the sand and out of your tank,

in other words, it makes the tank a hell of alot easier to maintain.

just noticed you have a 10 gal. dont bother with a dsb. i doubt it will make much of a difference on a tank that small and it will greatly reduce the water volume in the tank.

a DSB needs to be at least 4" deep and must be composed of very fine grained sand. is it real live sand or that aragalive crap?

theres nothing wrong with it, but 2 more inches woulb be a huge benefit to your tank.

the more surface area of sand that you have the more and better that your water is going to get filtered!
good luck
