Well I have been worried about trying to keep clams but decided to give it a try about 5-6 wks ago and I noticed today all three of them are growing! Im assuming this is a good sign :) Anyway I thought I would share my joy.

I am no clam expert, but I have done much research on them, but it looks to me that your clam is overextending its mantle. That is a sign of poor lighting for the clam.

hmmm how can you tell that? Id be somewhat suprised if it is not getting enough light, its directly under a mh bulb no more than 14 inches away.

Clams will extend their mantle farther out to increase surface area for increase light absorbtion. That is a sign that the clam doesn't have enough light, either from the tank itself not having proper light to begin with or the clam has outgrown the light. I'm gonna do some digging around the web for more info on it. I still might be wrong about your clam though.

I think it depends on the type of clam you have. Maximas show some amazing mantle extension while others species do not. I would be surprised if a stressed animal could demonstrate the apparent new growth that this clam seems to be showing.

Good point.
Clams can still grow if phytoplankton is plentifull in the tank and if the calcium and I think iodine and strotinum levels are mantained.
Is that a crocea msd2?

but then again with that kind of growth....hmmm maybe its the flow thats moving the mantle up....is it in a low flow area my clams hate high flow

The flow is moderate, I keep the turnover rate high in general in the tank (approx x24) its under a 250wt bulb.

yes I believe it is crocea, as far as ca and other traces, yes they are kept up. Phyto, is not, once a week, at most twice only.

hmmm does it seem to wave in the flow a little or does it seem to be extending its mantle on its own....a few more pics would maybe help decide if you have a healthy clam or not....
