You don't need to feed yellow polyps or star polyps. They get all of their nutrition from the lighting/water. I don't think they are capable of eating anything you can provide them with anyways.
As long as your water quality is good yellow polyps will spread about as quickly as zooanthids. I'd had a yellow polyp colony double in size in about 1.5 months. Star polyps spread very very quickly if you have good water flow on them. I've had a 2" peice totally cover a 8" rock in a little over 3 months.

I had mine for about 1 1/2 months and they have almost doubled. My Green Stars that I have had for about 3 weeks look like they are beginning to expand as well.
What is your lighting? They like alot of light.
I do feed my tank Kent Marine PhytoPlex once a week.

Initially my yellow polyps just set there barely opened. I tried various locations for light levels and flow, but for the most part they simply existed, and were nothing to brag about. My water parameters were fine........and everything else did super. Then all of a sudden (about 3 months down the road) those yellow polyps just up and started to grow and take on the typical look of yellow polyps, and opened up really great.......in about 2 months time they have more than doubled in size since they finally took ahold. So initially they were very slow, but now grow like weeds.
Same for my green star polyps. It has always looked fine, but after 1 month or so it really started to grow super fast..........now I can actually trim it or it gets to be too much and cover everything. No food necessary for either of those critters jut keep parameters of water right and they will do just fine.

well I have been doing this for a long time and the answere is that light and the correct light at that and water condition is paramont if these two paramators are in place then, the word quickly and this is equal to about 2 mo. for this to double. Although the word quickly is a tough word to put into terms of growth you will know start with lighting and follow through with making sure that your water quality is good. from the salinty to the calcium and everything in-between.

I have yellow polyps that aren't spreading but aren't dieing either. A friend of mine who doesn't feed his but whose grow like a weed, gave me a small rock of them. They were not doing well in my tank but I think the current was too strong. I moved them in a better location and they seem to be doing well but aren't spreading. Now mushrooms are another issue! I have all sorts of mushrooms growing everywhere. I will probably have to start cutting them eventually.
