I ordered some yellow polyps from here today. Are these poisonous like zoos?
What do I feed them?

I have had Yellow Polyps in two tanks. The first tank I did not take care of very well and didn't have much luck with them, and basically I never target fed them either. My current tank, is much cleaner and I am target feeding them (every few days..), with Cubed/frozen Mysis shrimp. They seem to love it. In 6 weeks or so, the population of them on this particular piece of rock has probably tripled and I will most likely frag a few off to other rocks in the near future. I have them in a medium flow area right now, although they did just as nicely in a high flow area. PC lighting seems just fine for them. I turn of the Powerheads etc. when I feed and just let the food fall on them from a turkey baster, pointed in their general direction. They are probably the biggest "live action" feeders in my tank, and truthfully "grab" the shrimp and close up around it...
Heres a photo just before feeding:

This is a photo, as the shrimp get dropped (a bit too much, but you get the idea..)

Here is a close-up of the polyps munching away...:

As far as the "poisonous zoo" theorys, currently, after reading as much as I can find on various forums and papers, "I" tend to believe the jury is still out on that one, and has created undo panic. That being said, I am a believer in wearing gloves while handling anything in my tanks, if not for my own good, for the good of the corals.
Best of luck with your new Yellow Polyps, a fine, easy and colorful addition to any tank...

Great pics, Bill; I love my yellow polyps, but I think I will be feeding them a little more often from now on, thanks to your post.

No problem... Glad the input helped...
I'd say many corals do NOT need target feeding, but, when you suppliment by target feeding they always seem to do a bit better. I guess the thing is, trying to find the right type, size and amount of food. Also, trying not to over-do it, and dirtying up the tank with too many nutrients. If to much food is left over, some of your more helpful clean-up crew will not do all the work they are supposed to, and become complacent in their job. ie. the peppermint shrimp might not patrol for Aptasia as much, why bother when a free meal of shrimp is on the way. Or maybe you are giving to much to the Bristle worms, if you have any, and they can then multiply and become somewhat of a nusiance. I think research is fun. When it comes to corals, learning what we can by reading, discussions and trying a few things out seems to be fun.. it's still a relatively new science, that is, the way we are doing in the past ten years or so..more progress gets made every day even in our own home tanks...
Cheers,
Bill

Yeah, I was concerned with that, so I use a fine mesh net to scoop out the leftovers after powering on the pumps. Still, I get lazy and days become a week with no feedings. If I can keep my calcium and alk levels up consistently, I'm sure that would help a lot too.
Also, I'm only halfway through the pack of mysis I have, but I should get some fresh stuff because mine has been in the freezer for around 6 months.
