I agree that if you are going to use bioballs, or other types of similar canister media, a rinse through saltwater is preferable, and freshwater could kill off the saltwater generated bacteria.

Sorry it took this long to get back with you Beth and thank you for all the info. I am not sure what type of substrate I have. I bought the tank and setup from a fish store and they did all the instal. Would it help if I sent some pics of the tank and filtration system? I would really like someone like yourself to evaluate and comment on whether or not I'm doing things right.

UPDATE...Made a temporary hospital tank and used a canister filter and pump for aeration and filtering. Put some plastic foliage and other items in the tank with the Tang to give it a place to hide. Then I added 200 mg of Erythromycin each day for 7 days and did 25% water swaps every other day. This morning I took the Tang out of the hospital tank , did a 2hr drip re-acclimation and then put it back in the main tank. We now have a healthy looking Tang!

Cool glad that worked out I was going to say yellow tangs get stressed easy I have one they are also a good way of taking care of your parameters tangs will change colors at any sign of water quality or nitrate fluxuations

Sure, if you'd like to post some pics of your system up with filters, etc. Is your substrate course or fine?
