Yellow Vs. Kole Tang

Hi,
I have been told that having a kole tang in a 75 gallon would be enough room, but it would not be enough room for a yellow tang. From the research Ive done there is only a 1 in. difference in full grown size. So why is one allowed and the other is not?

Oh, well thats disappointing, so what size would fit, I really wanted to try and add a larger bodied fish

Joe meant it the other way. Either the Kole or Yellow would work in your 75gal. I have a Yellow in my 90gal, and the only difference is 75gal's are 4inches shorter. Though obviously buy a smaller specimen. A plate sized adult Yellow Tang isn't going to work.

Does that mean that I would have to get rid of the yellow once it got larger?

There is still much to be learned in our hobby. Our Yellow tang is nearing in on the decade mark and is still relatively small. I am not saying for other people with smaller tanks to run out and buy a yellow. If I had to pick a hard number, a tank with a 4'x18" footprint (length and depth) is the minimum for a Yellow tang.

I say Kole. They are good looking fish and the yellow is pretty much the SW poster fish.
I just wanted to ask if SW fish are like FW fish in that their growth could depend on the size of the tank they are in?
For example I had a 4 inch FW Pleco in a ten gallon and he stayed that size for over a year. I gave him to My friend with a 75 gallon FW and with in a month it is already at least 8 inches now.
Do SW fish do this?
