ok well i got my live rock today from SWF.com (it is great) and this is my problem after i put it in i put my sand in and it is insainly cloudy. but the big problem is that there was this thick foam at the top and when i was scrapin it away it was heavy. is this normal or should i be worried.

The cloudy water is very normal after putting in sand. Rinsing it out a bit usually helps with that. As for the crap floating on top. I don't know. I would just scoop it out. Do you have fish in there right now?

cloudy water - normal
foam on top - normal
as for rinsing substrate - don't
you should be fine...just give it a few days to clear up

the fine particals that cause the cloudiness are always going to be there even with rinsing. I have done both and without rinsing semed to clear u pfaster and stay cleared up then when I rinsed the sand.

mine was heavy too - but not too surprising it took about 2 days for it to settle then I went in with a turkey baster and blew off the rocks and it took another two days to settle.
My cycle is almost half way through (after a week and a half) I used some live sand and some live rock and some pieces of shrimp .... my cycle seems to be going faster than normal. I had three pieces of zooanthids hitchhike in on a rock and after the latest sandstorm settled they opened up .... hoping they make it through the cycle.
sorry rambling - no caffieene yet .....

Yeah, you are fine. Give it another day or 2. After it all has settled. blow all the dust off the rocks. If you want, you could vacuum the sand, but carefully. If you have fine sand, it will be more difficult, but if you have crushed coral, it should be alot easier. Just get a small vacuum kit from the lfs, or if you already have one for your FW tanks. Just don't suck all the sand up, just dust. I'm sure you wiil lose some sand in the process. In my experience with this, I noticed that the water got more cloudy when the fish would stir it up or when I moved some rock, so I actually prefer NOW to rinse the sand before I pour it in the tank. If you want to avoid this, just vacuum out alot of your sand into a bucket and just rinse it out in the bucket. Use the sprayer part on your kitchen sink, hit the sand with some water, shake it around, carefully dump the cloudy water, repeat. It is important to do this before your sand actually starts to build up any bacteria or other little critters from your LR make a home out of it. Some people may disagree with me, and to those people: I may be wrong, so if you disagree, tell me why because this is also of some concern to myself.
Fishman- Tell your dad to chill. He sounds like my dad... Just explain it to him in a way so that he will have no clue as to what you are saying. Use a lot of technical terms-Tell him about the whole cycling process.. That always works when the wife is giving me $h1t about wasting money on the tank. Good luck!

Whoa whoa whoa..... wife now? What happened to engaged??? Have I missed something since I havent been able to visit since the war started? Has their been a wedding Im not aware of? Cause going from "the fiance says" to "the wife says" is just as big a step as the dang vows. You're getting a phone call in about three point none seconds.

If this is the same thing as the baby clothes, and furthermore, if there is a baby to fit in those clothes... I'm coming up there.

NO HAIRTRIGGER!!! I'M NOT F@#%ING MARRIED. I just didn't want to look like a dumbass cuz I didn't have time or know how to spell fiance, I guess I do now. THANX A BUNCH D1CKHEAD!! OK, now that you are outta my face.....
FISHMAN88- Yeah, if you vacuum your sand, you will get most of the fine dust out. If you want it ALL out, them rinse the sand in a bucket like I told you. You will get most of the dust out, but not ALL of it. Your tank will clear up with time, just leave it alone for a few days.
HAIRTRIGGER- YOU NEED HELP!! WHO SAID ANYTHING ABOUT BABY CLOTHES?!?! You need to take a day off or something. You are getting stupid.
