YES Soda water does work!

I was cutting some corals earlier this pm. My green star polyp was still closed up because I made some cuttings from it and what did I see looking out of a hole in the rock? Yup, a mantis. I yanked the rock back out, shot a fizz of soda water (I keep on hand for just such an occasion)in the hole and he jumped out of there like I set his a** on fire! He is a good 1.5 inches long.

Are you going to keep it? Or have you already disposed of it? Of not, I would LOVE to have it, I would happily pay shipping. I have been wanting to set up a species tank for one for a while now.

I think from what original poster said it, it sounded like it was an unknown hitch hiker on LR probably...happens...you never know what you get sometimes or how much the LFS has picked through the LR already for themselves...
hey SHADOW there's a place in Houston that sometimes has the pea ---- mantis shrimps...VERY COLORFUL...VERY AGRESSIVE...I think they wanted $30 or $40 for them; I think they averaged about 3-4" in size; it's a LFS called
FISH RANCH II
you can find their # at www.bigyellow.com

I sure has heck didn't buy it! I still have him but not sure what I'm going to do with it yet. I really don't want to go through the hassel of shipping it anywhere. How would you ship it anyway?

I bought one from my LFS who had acquired two from people who caught them in their tanks as unwanted guests.
So what I'm saying is... try your local LFS they may want 'em.
Mine is cool - it's in a 20

Shipping would be pretty much the same as with any specimen. Double-bagged in plastic with 1/3 full of water, inside a styrofoam cooler, inside a cardboard box.

i am wondering how you shot soda into the tank? does coke work better than pepsi? do you use a sringe? what the hell did ya do???

I saw which hole he was hiding in. Lucky for me the rock was on the very top of my reef. I took some water from the tank, placed the rock in it. The hole was big enough for a turkey baster so I sucked up some soda water, gave it a good squirt and out he flew.

Sweettooth, the water you use is plain carbonated water, not actual flavored sodas. The clear, unflavored carbonated water irritates the mantis enough for it to attempt to find a new hiding place. You take the rock out, place in a 5-gallon bucket, and use a turkey baster to squirt water into the hole where the mantis is hiding. It usually will run out of the hole to find a new location, and you remove the rock while the mantis is off of it, leaving the mantis in the bucket and placing the rock back in your tank. You then mail the mantis to me. ;)

...and another thing!
For shipping a mantis, or any small invert/fish...there is another good way to do it besides the bags/styrofoam method.
You can get the new glad zip containers, they're CHEAP, and they make them in all different sizes. Just fill it with about 1/3 water, and tape the top securely. Then pack it in a small box with some kind of padding or bubble wrap and send it overnite. Works like a charm.
