is this the difference between a closed and open system?? those two terminologies have me confused....

I think that he means that when it comes from the hole in the tank, it is piped directly into a canaster filter. then directly back to the tank. I do belive an open loop system is like mine. From tank, to a refgum/sump (20gal long) then back to the main tank. Where his, IF sealed correctly would not run out during a power outage, unlike mine, that when the power goes out, it would leave me a nice big puddle of water on my floor. But i do have a siphon break for that.;)

Open would have an overflow. Closed loop circulation is pretty simple. It just used for circulation. Its a whole lot of water flow for reef tanks using PVC plumbing to direct it as you desire. Also in closed loop circulation the pumps run at almost full force due the presure from the tank cancels out the head presure of the distance of plumbing. Do a search on closed loop circulation. You can see some pretty wild looking settups.

at the bottom of the page where you are writing to post there is a box that says attatch file: and next to it a box that says browse. click breowse and look in your pics folder and then click on that. or if you know the directory and file name you can manually enter it (dos anyone?) and your pics should come up.
it sounds to me that the person you bought the tank from might have also gotten it used and couldn't figure out how to deal with the holes drilled in the bottom. these were most likely first drilled to make use of a standpipe setup. if you would like to set up a safer and more stable filtration system, you can do some searches in the database for standpipes and sumps to get an idea of how they work. it wouldnt be a cheap project, but it would definately make your system much more stable, and would allow you to keep a much larger variety of live in the tank healthy and happy.
