Hey everybody! Good to see some familiar names still! It's been too long (about a year) to have an empty tank, so I'm going to go ahead and get it wet again. I'm really hoping to have the glass cut for the coast to coast next week. I have to re-study a lot of things: I've forgotten a good bit, but I'm sure it will come back quickly.

.... and your gone again. LOL
Hahaha....
I have a 30B going, with the few fish that survived the crash but once the 125 is back up I'm going to take the 30B down. If I gain the same steam that I lost for the hobby, then maybe I'll set up the 30B as a frag tank, but one step at a time, eh?
Along with the C2C overflow, I'm going to have to do a sump re-design. Hopefully I'll be able to use the 40L I have down there now. Also, I am done with halides-they are just too expensive with bulb replacement, cost to run, and the inefficient heat they produce. I'm going LED. Another thing I will have to research heavily....any suggestions on a starting point?

Check out the reefbreeders Photon units. They are 3watt chinese units, that have full spectrum and are dimmable and controllable. You would need 2 32" units over your 125g.

I'll check them out. Are people mostly happy with them? I used Odyssea fixtures (I'm pretty sure you knew that, though) and was happy with them. I might spring for name brand fixtures this time, but we'll see...
getting glass cut for the c2c tomorrow.

Im considering buying a small one for my ten gallon if that says anything.
I respect your opinion: you practice ethical reefkeeping and you do your research. So yes, it does say something. I will have time to read-up on them since I still have a lot to do before the tank gets wet let alone before it's ready for SPS.

Thanks for the compliments. There are others on this board that would disagree.
I'm looking at one for my 10g, since I'm breaking down the 75g and downgrading. I don't know if I want to DIY any LEDs, but since I have an Apex Jr, it would be fun to learn how to control the lights if I did do a DIY. On a large reef tank, a DIY I feel is out of the question... you'd be much better off buying a commercial unit, like the photon 32.

Welcome Back as well!!!!!! I've been following the chinese units, and some interesting reading over on RC thread.....Mixed reviews but you have to take it with a grain of salt because everyones tastes and opinions will vary.....I think they look rather promising though.....

I just finished reading through 17 pages on R2R re: Reefbreeders LEDs. They definitely have my attention. There wasn't much talk at all about how SPS do under these lights, though.

If you look at the photos on their website, their tanks are mostly sps dominate. I talked to the guy (forgot his name) that sells them about them performing well for an sps dominate tank and he said absolutely.
In fact, many people have to run those little units at half power or less on mixed reefs. So im sure you can adjust it up as necessary to meet the light demands of your corals.
I finally decided to buy a photon16 for my little ten gallon build.

I have 2 of the d120s on my 50g... White is 50% blue is 75% I mostly have lps and ricordias...great growth and color from them...and keep my tank cool...

Honestly I think there are many variables to answer that question. As we all know it doesn't come down solely to lighting.
There are people who have run AI, Radion, Reefbreeder, and so on LED units that claim no success with LEDs and others that claim major growth and improved coloration. Corey and a few others had discussed this topic way back and a general consensus is tons of variables.... acclimation process to the lights, and importantly water.
There is a big thread of a guy and I might be incorrect on his location and its a huge tank with SPS that started the system with LEDs thay they are incredible. I think he's in Brazil or Puerto Rico..... either way many success stories to go along with failures. That is just the same as when people argued MH vs T5 and the old school fluorescent lighting T 12's. Variables......

When I researched them, I was looking to see if they would support SPS as well. Everything I read said it should do just fine. The emitters are not the best in the would, but that is overcome by the amount and the power. 2Quills had a great link a couple of months back talking about the different LED emitters on the market, and that only certain companies had the rights to the premium ones.
I have a decent amount of SPS in my 125g tank right now and my Photon's are up to 90% on the blue channel and 70% on the white and colored channel during the peak 2 hrs of the lighting schedule. I have to be very careful adding new SPS corals to the tank and make sure that they are on the bottom of the tank for a week or two so they don't get fried. I purchased a frag tree to help acclimate them as time goes on.
I would say that these Photon units are comparable to first gen Radion's, maybe a little better. But they are not as good as the new premium units on the market. BUT they cost a lot less.
