New LFS in Plainfield, Illinois. Grand opening supposed to be last saturday(Sept 24).... I know there are two sides of the story - here's mine.
2 weeks before opening a brand new store in my area, one that I've been waiting for for 10 years, I walk up to the store and ask to talk to the owner. The guy outside says - sure - he's inside. I walk in and introduce myself as a customer. There are 2 other workers in store. I state how I'm looking forward to his opening and explain to him I'll need a 90 gal overflow tank with stand and glass top in a few weeks, because I'm moving and have to transfer all from an inwall to a stand tank and I'm upgrading. He's says no problem, gives me prices and asks to have 3 days in advance to get them in.
2 weeks later - last friday night, I walk in. Store is due to open saturday I find out. I walk in - door was open. There's a bit of mess in middle of floor, under construction still. I walk in and some 20 year old walks up and says "what can I do for yah?". I ask to see the owner. He say "I am the owner". I said - "ok - where's the owner?". I have a smile on my face because I figure he's joking around. He walks up to me and forces me (forcefully nudging) to the door and points to it, stating they aren't open yet. I turn red in the face, fist clenched. I tell him that I spoke to the owner and he gave me prices and I need to order my tank and stand.
He says - "that was my brother, and I'm an owner too". I show him the prices - outside the store and he says - write your phone number on there. I was boiling. I said "no". I'll wait to see your brother, who was on his way. He says to me "I remember you, you came in here 2 weeks ago and walked right past me and showed no respect". (I didn't know he was owner's brother". ) I was like - wow - this guy is something else. There's a marble missing somewhere.
I left for a minute, came back and he talked normal to me. I stood there waiting for 5 more minutes and left - they lost my business.
They come from the city of Chicago to the suburbs and treat there customers like this? I was ready to spend $600 right there! I would think the LFS's anywhere would be bending over backwards to get business with our economy.
Now I'm at a loss for what to do. I ordered my tank from another place - Aquatica in Tinley Park, but this place is a mile from me, very close. I'd like to do business in there at some point..

As a LFS employee, I would agree that for an owner to be that calus and punitive is silly. Although his situation is probaly strained. If they are late for the store opening I am sure he was under pressure and may not have fired back at you the way he did under normal circumstances. If the store proves to have quality product and their LFS eployees are knowledgable and poliet, I say give them another chance.

they were late opening... you may be right... but I bought the tank and stand somewhere else. I'll probably buy small items from them and just be business like, nothing else...

After that kind of treatment, I would never be back - I don't care if they were next door. What ever happened to customer SERVICE?

I believe I know this "skinhead" you are talking about. His store used to be a half a block from me. I know this guy may be young but he is very knowledgeable about the hobby. He helped me set up my first tank. And he has always taken crap from older people not taking him seriously because of his age. He's about 21 or 22. I am a 21 year old store manager and I go through the samething everyday. Customers not taking me seriously. Looking behind me and asking for the "real manager". I believe this was the case. There was about 2 times I came in to his old store and he would tell me how he was being mistreated from wholesalers, who would refer to him as "kid" or "bro". Maybe you hit a soft spot and should of taken him seriously when he told you he was the owner. But then how could you of known. He's is a very good guy with a passion for the hobby. He's been in my area for a while and was upset when he was moving, but the landlord tried to screw him on his lease. Don't let some other jackoffs ruin your chances. Yes he may have been rude, but just give this guy another shot. It'll be worth it trust me.

No offense buddy, but it sounds like you got more bent out of shape than the guy at the LFS. I'm still trying to figure out what he did wrong in your story.

well, he walks into a store with a happy attitude and is rudely sent out by the owner, and i'm sure by "fist clenched" he means he was just a little angry that he was sent out, not ready to hit him. The owner probably caught doodle by suprise.

Lets see, you walk into a store all excited about getting a new 90 gallon tank and stand and whatever. The "owner" gets offended because you you smilingly think he's kidding about whether he is the owner. And he pushes up against you and points to the door. Then mouths off to you, how you showed disresect to him by not knowing he was the owner a few weeks before. He was sweeping the floor at the time, in fact both times. He's 20 - you're 48. Now - tell me you're face doesn't get flushed and with someone literally pushing you to the door for no reason, you're fist doesn't clinch up? I'm sorry - I'm not a violent person, not at all, I haven't had a fight since I was 20 myself. I'm as easy going as they get, especially all happy about getting my new setup. Now I don't know how you are, but when a guy gets hit in the face or even touched when he doesn't want to be - something is going to happen. Now I know there are 2 sides to everything, but there is no way I came in there to offend anyone. In fact I'm going to give them another chance, but I already got the tank and stand somewhere else. From I what I hear the guy was picked on in in last store and in fact I feel bad for him if he was. I'll probably go in there and ask him to help me just to show I respect his knowledge about the hobby and make him feel better about things. I porbably hurt his feelings is all that happened. But coming from Chicago to the suburbs, he's going to have to lose the attitude, he's going to have to put up with customers in order to succeed. Even customers like me.

I agree with Mudd. But, I also believe "the customer is always right". That is if ya wanna sell stuff. Right or wrong, he lost some business because you somehow offended him by "not showing him respect". Maybe he's not in it for the money. . .
Scenerio: The same guy hires someone who is vertically challenged(short). This little fellow has "little man syndrom". (BIG CHIP--little shoulder) A customer somehow offends shortie and shortie lets him have it for the complete lack of respect to his stature. Customer takes his business elswhere. Do ya think the young owner would be pleased with his employee? Do ya think he would understand how his feelings were hurt?
I don't think so.

I think if you are a store owner, however young, you better learn to laugh off anyone who asks for the "real manager" with a "yeah, I'm a boy genius, and I really am an owner here"
You better get used to it and not have a temper tantrum...regardless of age (and I've seen some "older" owners have some too), that would turn people away. There is a guy here who has started up his own out of home LFS type thing. He's not extremely tall, shall we say, but he laughs it off and his signature is "the human frag."
He's a great guy.
JMO tho.

I would have had a little fun with you. When you asked to see the owner I would have said sure I'll go get him, I would've walked to the back of the store or out of sight, waited a few minutes and then come back out and say "can I help you"

I don't know much. But it sounds like the store was not open yet. Why are you trying to get special treatment going in twice to do business before there ready? I know its a $600 sale. I also imagine that a tank is not where the money is for the store. I don't want to say you were wrong. But I don't know you were right either. He should treat customers nicely and I'd bet that it was just those trying to get a store open on time frustrations. During construction you would not want a customer in there. Your just not ready to be a salesman.

My mechanic has a sign on the wall that always makes me pause:
"You can have your car fixed:
Good
Quick
Cheap
Pick any two."
Cheap is great but only if the store is good.
I like good and cheap. I will sacrifice service for a nice store with good prices.
I like good service with a nice store and I'm willing to pay for it.

I've never seen a store that had a great display, provided great service and was cheap. Don't expect I will.
So forgive his rudeness. Give them another chance to F it up.

I am for 100% great customer service. I cannot stand when I am a good paying customer and get treated like crap. You were going to spend $600 with the owner and he acted like an ass. I often wonder how people like that stay in business.
Under pressure, too young, whatever the excuse, if the customer service is no good the store will not be that good either. Think of the way he treats vendors, manufacturers etc.
There are a few LFS I have been in and they are terrible for customer service. One stands behind the desk and does not ask if I need help. After being in there 5 times and not getting any Customer Service I think something is wrong there. Needless to say, I have not purchased anything from there.
The other LFS that I will not go to is one that has a lady that has been there for 15 years and has great knowledge of the hobby but has no knowledge of how to treat a customer. She is always very rude with comments when I ask to see a fish eat or anything like that. I made one purchase from there and have not purchased anything since.
If you are going to be a business owner you need to give quality products ad great customer service. The people that shop at the places that give bad customer service are just telling business owners that its okay to treat people like crap. I am not for that regarless of price. I will spend the extra dollar if they treat me right. With competitve pricing all over it is not difficult to find close to the same price from a differrent store. Most, often price match if you ask them.
Just my thoughts.

"I'm a chicken hawk, huntin' for a chicken!"
While I do agree that my money doesn't get offended, I don't want to perpetuate the business of someone who can't treat their customers right. At the same time, a store with good deals is always going to get my business because I can't afford to pay top dollar most of the time.
Simple rule of thumb for almost every life situation... don't let emotions rule your decisions.
