hey, my cycle is almost done, just got my diatom outbreak and my ammonia has gone down by 2 overnight almost, so I figure by the weekend ill be ready to get my first fish. So I was just wondering, whats everyone's favorite fish in their tank? I'm going for a reef tank with nonviolent fish, so dont say like .."lionfish" or "picasso trigger" or whatever, cause I can't get those. I'm just looking for ideas for my own setup. Oh, and tell me WHY it's your favorite too = )

oh, and i forgot, the tank is 40 gallons, but it looks much bigger than that...everyone thinks I have a 55 tall or something when they see it. so im sure that influences the fish I could get.

My clarkii clownfish pair. TONS of personality and they love to surf in the flow from my koralia PH. Also a 40g is a 40g no matter what it looks like so it looking like a 55H doesn't effaect your fish choice. Still, so many wonderful fish you can get!

My bicolor blenny is so stinkin cute. In a 40 gallon you might try a yellow headed jawfish because they are very entertaining. A pair of clowns are always cute too.

thanks for all the posts guys. to the first dud,e yeah I know to let nitrites go down too....only thign is, like, the color I'm getting from the drop test doesnt match any color on the little chart lol...so I dunno how high or low it is. I'm HOPING it's in between the first 2 shades and itll go down quite soon once the ammonia drops, but it might be higher and ill have to put off fish till NEXT weekend or something....but anyway
I see a couple peeps saying the blennys. I LOVE blennys too, but the only thign is, I can catch those here for free, so I don't need to buy those. They aren't "lawnmowers" but they look even cooler. The dorsal fin is very tall, like a sailfish almost lol. I think im gonna catch some and QT them for a month or so then add some to my tank later.
as for the other fish...a sixline wrasse DOES look like a good choice. I'll look more into those. Appareantly they stay quite small? And they're pretty colorful too. Thats always good. Other than that, I'm not too sure.....I don't want any clownfish, I already know that much. I want to keep my tank unique. I've literally never seen an aquarium in someones house that DIDNT have a pair of clownfish of some sort. Nothign agaisnt clownfish, its just that theyre cliche.
oh, and I've decided agaisnt chromis from the very start. Not very pretty fish, in my opinion =
what about a dragon wrasse? anyone ever had one of these? my LFS just got 2 of the juviniles in for a reasonable price (25$) and I think one of those would be nice, as long as I dont get any small shrimp. What do yall think?

Dragon wrasses are not really reef safe, definately not with shrimp. They also like to move rocks with their mouths, aka "rock movers." Which will in turn tumble rocks. They like to burrow, under rocks and this moves the rocks around a lot. They won't hurt corals, per say, but any snail, or shrimp is lunch. If you are not planning on getting these then they are great.
I had one, in my earlier days, and had to get rid of it, it moved things around too much.
This would be great in a FOWLR tank. Very colorful.
My favorite is any of the fairy wrasses.....extremely colorful, and full of personality as long as not in a very rambuctous tank.
