Zebra Moray Requirements...

My LFS has a beautiful zebra moray that I am interested in purchasing. I do not have a current tank that would be suitable for him to be added to, so I had asked the LFS what size tank I would need to maintain him for life. I was told that she knows of people who have them in a 30, a 54 and a 60. I'm thinking that this can't be right. The eel is currently *my best guess* about 2 feet. He also appears to be pretty active and "cramped" in the display that they have got him in right now which is definitley more than a 30 so I cannot imagine how that would be suitable for him.
For anyone that has experience or knowledge about this guy, could you please give me your opinions on the proper environment, mainly tank size, that I would need to consider him homed permanently.
Thank you!

Do to space requirements in a store I understand that they put fish/etc in smaller than required tanks.. and people see them and think the same tank size is just fine for life of the fish/etc.
Kudos to you for wanting to give him room. I wouldn't go under 125 though personally.

Zebras usually only get two to three feet in captivity, I thought about one for my 135 but it still seems small because of how thick they are but it's doable in that size depending on rockwork, other fish and filtration. I wouldn't go under a 125 either though, maybe if it was small.

Yeah I had a feeling that her estimate was a gross underexaggeration. Okay...so a 125 minimum. Now do you know if these guys appreciate the pvc tunnels. I'm thinking some tunnels and liverock (obviously). Have to check on whether or not they are coral safe so I can plan "his" tank. Now they have several small fish in the tank with him at lfs - I was told that he doesn't bother them at all and is strictly on a scallop diet. Of course, I would supplement his diet with more than just scallops ~ I'm a believer in diversity lol, but is it true that for the most part, he would get along fine with small fish? Or should I consider it to be a species only tank? Thanks for all your help!

I wouldnt put it with anything you would be upset over lossing, they are still eels and could decide at any time to eat whatever is there. I like a tang or 2 about 6 damsels and the zebra. You could try PVC but they would need some of the 3 or 4 inch wide ones to be able to fit though. other than that, id say you are good to start, they are great eels, my lfs has 2 and i wish i could add one to my tank, but my triggers would kill it
good luck

We have Zeke, our 24" zebra eel in a 150 with two triggers, a guineafowl puffer, lunar wrasse, cinnamon clown and a flame cardinal. He came out right away after introduction but the niger trigger picked on him a fair amount. Now things are good and he is eating like a horse. We reconfigured the tank so there were a lot of caves and hiding places and he moves about quite freely in these shaded areas.

I would go 90 minimum for a Zebra with lots of caves... Compared to Snowflakes, they get much larger...
they get about a foot longer than a SFE and pretty much the same thickness. but I agree with the tank size.
