I have a 36" JBJ power compact fixture with 96 watt 10K bulb and 96 watt sunpaq 460/420 combination actinic bulb. So far its been enough for LPS (hammer), pom pom xenia, zoo's and mushrooms without problems. On a standard size 30 gallon (considered relatively shallow - 18" deep) its SUPPOSE to be adequate for SPS too but I havent tried any.

I always use R/O water for my system. If I do a 100 gal water change I can get it to 25ppm but it creeps back up after a few weeks and that's with doing 30 gallon weekly changes. It seems to stop right at 50 though.

I have 75 pounds of live rock
a 4 inch dsb
Lots of Macroalgae,,,,,5 different kinds
I have a fluval canister filter
HOB filter
Prizm Protein Skimmer
I use some activated high grade charcoal
Clean fluval out every two weeks
I use Poly filter in the HOB and change weekly
I keep phosphates low with a phosphate sponge similar to the poly filter
I have had zero nitrates for months
I only use deionized water not r/o....imagine that?

0 Trates here! 125 gal set up for 1.5 yrs. I even have CC!!!
Only about 40# live rock too along w/other rainbow rock, coral rock and slate rock. Maybe just good luck? I do 10% water changes every month and feed my fish everyday?
