Zoanthids j21kickster

I really want to get a bunch of different zoanthid colonies in my tank. I was wondering if anyone could give me a suggestion on how many would be too few, for them to reproduce over time. If I were to get just 2 or three polyps of a certain colony do you think I would have a chance??
Thank you, just trying to get some really cool looking zoo's and would rather pay a little bit of money and a lot more time than a lot more money with a little bit of time.

Definitely try to find some local reefers and see if they will swap with you. I try to trade (both give and receive) colonies with no less than 4 polyps. Most people who are willing to trade can and will give up 4 polyps. In the world of zooanthids, 4 polyps isn't much for people who are having luck getting them to spread.

that is my plan, finding local reefers....Anyway so it looks like the "magic" number is 4? I know there is not a concrete number but just been wondering what would be good

4 is just the number I use. Makes the colony big enough to enjoy until they start spreading, and it gives some room for error should a polyp die for whatever reason.

paid $5 for bluish tint bright orange centers - 20+ on a rock. 4 polyps? Seems excessively low...
I'd say 10 would be a better number to work with unless it's a really rare or particularly slow growing Zoa...

Then the guy who sold them to you was either being really nice or knew nothing about them- That is a steal
Honestly it only takes a few to start them off- Their growth is exponential- 1 to 2- 2 to 4- 4 to 8 and so on- provided they have room and arent crowed- bit sometimes they send runners a few cm long and new ones sprout from that- To all of you who are intrested- i have started fragging several of the ones i have- some colors are going to take longer to grow b/c a few of the species i have- i only have a dozen or so- The way i do it takes a while but it is also to make sure it is not wastefull- i start with only one zoanthid to a rock (of each color )and i let them go from there. I usually wait about a month before i consider trading them to ensure they have start to spread and hav a good hold to the rock - but if you are patient i can get to you in the future but since frag trades are not allowed here- i will have to figure something else out- so lest not let this get out of hand and get deleted but keep in mind that i will figure something out in the not too distant future

either that or you're paying too much.....
Seriously though folks - frags of any corals unless they're rare shouldn't be more than $10. leathers, common rics, zoos, should be about $5. Ok - so for rare color morphs if you pay $15 or $20 for a frag that's okay but if you're paying more than that, it's unfortunate.
What I can't understand is the prices people pay for things that people make up cetchy names for. But I guess whatever the market is willing to bear, supply and demand and all that...

???
How many zoanthids do you really expect to get for 10$.. Maybe a rock of maybe 12-15 common zoanthid polyps. Any more and they're going to be 15-20$ or more if rare.. That's because they spread so prolifically and it's not absurd to spend 20$ for 30 polyps for something that will be 100 in the not too distant future.
And those prices are online stores. At a LFS, you can spend 50-60$ on a rock that would cost you 30-40 online...
The only place you're going to get 5$ frags is from a friend or for 3-5 polyp frags.
You must have a great, inexpensive LFS. Go checkout most of the on-line zoanthid places, and they're all 20-30$ for rocks of 20-30 polyps.. And that's not the rare ones.

Maybe in an ideal world where the hobby is driven by trading among fellow reefers.
But if you're dealing with an LFS, then the LFS still has to make up for overhead, shipping, etc. in the prices of their livestock. A nice sized rock (abough the size of a baseball) with basic zoos, shrooms, or polyps on it goes for ~$60 around here.

:D You must not shop around for zonathids much- Mosty of the time that are minimum of 20 for a dozen or so- For rare morphs they are 30 for a 2" frag- a 6" with awesome color is around 80$- Trust me i know- I shop all the online stores and all the LFS in the area and the only time you see prices like that are for the ugly brown ones
