The difference between the Zoa's and Palythoa is that Zoa's, although colonial, do not share a common mat. They grow as individuals where the Sea Mats have a fibrous encrusting mat. The Palythoa species can not be separated without cutting through this fibrous mat. Most Palythoa are sold as Button Polyps as the two species are very similar.

jtrzerocool ~ i dont know if we have the same ones but i bought mine completely brown too. now they are getting brighter and brighter green centers. the largest polyp opens up to over the size of a quarter. ive been feeding them brine shrimp and they seem to like it. they like the halides too.

I agree on the lighting difference. If they were aquacultured they might have just had them under growth lights for propagation and under 6500K growth lights they will grow faster, but will not color up. The blues in 20K and in actinics is what helps them color up. I have some of these I got a frag of about 20 for $5 and now have about 30 in less than a month(mine are more filled with green all the way out to the tentacles, although not as bright). I feed mine mysis and cyclopeeze, sometimes they get some silverside shreds as well. My largest polyp is a bit larger than a quarter and the tentacles reach out about an inch.
PerfectDark has the differences down pretty well. The only thing I will add is that the Palythoas react faster to light and movement while the Zoanthids are slower, also the tentacles of the Palys have some type of nematocites while the Zoas do not. I reached in to pick mine up and the tentacles of one stuck to my finger like those on an anemone.

Hello. I was wondering your opinion on feeding corals. I do not have that many, some mushroom, some button polyps, possibly a little zoos?, a christmas tree and a leather coral of some kind.
I feed the fish ans inverts a mixure of reef plankton, marine cusine, emerald entree, squid and brine shrimp.
Do the corals get some of that?
I have heard different stories. Should I supplement? It is just 29 gallons.
Thank you. :)

I feed mine DT's as well. just a suggestion, make your own thread instead of digging up older ones. you will get more responses that way

Lighting and organic levels seem to cause color changes in them. Even intensities. Place them high in your tank and after a couple months place them low and in a few weeks to month they will change from the color they were while up high.
Kind of sucks when you get rare zoanthids that are colorful when recieved and change to dull before your eyes. Just have to place them either in more intense or lower light to get their color back. Have fun with them.
