i have an issue something like this. my zoos are new to the tank though. they have been in there for 48 hrs and I haven't seen them open up. they were shipped to me overnight. my tank parameters are fine. is this normal for zoos new to a tank?

Water temp varies from 77 to 79 degrees. Some of these colonies have been in the tank for several months to a year and this just started to happen. Maybe a few polyps will semi-open out of the 50 to 100 in the colony. The colonies are not disintegrating, they are not opeing at night, no fish are picking at them, when hermits crawled on them in the past yes they did close but re-opened in minutes. Everything else in the tank is fine. No aggressive additions near the colonies, no fungus, no red algae present, nothing out of the ordinary. Water checks out fine, pH, Nitrates, ammonia, etc..all good, calcium at about 450 - 500 ppm as it always has been. Salinity at about 1.021- 1.023 as it has been for months. Water change 3 weeks ago did not help. I don't have a clue...

same exact thing was happening to me and the problem for me was my calcium was kinda high and once i corrected that they are slowly opening back up again, so you may want to check that if you havent already

Thanks scarface...I'll lighten up on the calcium and see what happens....I'm going to post some picks in a few hours. Let me know if this is what yours looked like...

Scarface hasn't replied yet but he suggested it may be too much calcium. My last reading was at 450 - 500ppm. It was about 350 - 400 before I added about 25 pound piece of liverock which was about the time the zo's started shutting down now that I think about it. So, I lower the calcium I'm adding to the tank. I've got a feeling that may be it. I'll keep those interested parties informed.

sorry i was away at lunch...but yeah mine looked exactly like that and i lowered my calcium to 450 and they are finally starting to open up, about 75% them have and I have feeling as time goes on the rest of them will too because they were like that for about a good 3 weeks before i got worried :sleepy: lol sorry but everything is getting better now so check that calcium

lowering the calcium? i would have never thought of that in a million years. i'll give that a shot and see what happens with mine.

ur right, i will give it time. i would just like to try to do everything that i can to help them open up. about 3 polyps are opened up (out of 100+). slowly but surely I think they'll come around.

OK...Still having problems with my zoo's. Calcium level is normal, all other parameters are great. Adding magnesium and strontium as prescribed, water change also and my zoo's are still looking dormant. I have a good size Devils's Finger in my tank and I was told that this can release an enzyme in the water that can be harmful to shroons and zoo's. But, since I have a hairy green colony growing next to it, yes touching it, and my other shroons continue to spread I can't see the DF being the problem. Any other thoughts or suggs would be great. I added a new colony of zoo's about two weeks ago. It was opened for about three days and is now not looking as good. The other zoo's that don't open haven't disintegrated, they just will not open. I am at a loss as to what to do. Does anyone know that if, when cutting pulsing xenia back, (I have to do this about once a month or so) that there could be some harmful affect to the zoo's? But, I haven't trimmed them since I put the new colony in so that can't be it either.....
