do they like the same type of lighting? the zoos on this rock seem to be doing well, while the mushrooms don't seem to be. should i try moving the shrooms off of the rock?

zoas tend to like higher lighting than shrooms, (not always though) and zoas can take higher flow, shrooms tend to bunch up and drop of in higher flow.

that's exactly what they are doing. so should i try to remove them from the rock and put in lower flow area?

you could try that. I've also noticed shrooms tend to do better when angled like a backslash / rather than sitting flat. which is pretty much how you have them. I hope it helps.

if you want to move them pretty much whole you'll have to use a razor and cut the heads free from the foot, then use any of the usual frag methods for attachment, I prefer placing them in a shallow container of sand, let them attach to the sand for a few days then superglue them to the rock you want them on. you can also use bridal mesh, sew them to the rock there are many ways of attaching. the glue method seems to be the most effective for me.

hahah that would be just great. idk if they will grow or not there. when fully extended, they are about 1.5-2" diameter but then shrink to like 3/4" diameter and i really don't think they like the placement. the Zoo's though are doing awesome (this pic is about 2 weeks old)

what keeps the shrooms from floating away in the current? I have them in a container with the sand, but they don't seem to want to stay in it.

ended up putting a cover on it open about 1/2 on one side and i can see some water movement in there, but just not enough to move the shrooms.
when i cut them off, some white stringy stuff came out of the middle of them, but then went back in. is that normal?

just cut them off and let them drift. before you know it theyll take a hold soemwhere else they feel comfortable.

kk, just seemed like i killed them. assuming its how they feed?
as for floating, they were so small (probably 1/2" after cutting them off) that i didn't want them getting stuck on my powerhead or worse, in the devil's domain where nothing comes out again... (pistol shrimps tunnels... he likes to decorate quite a bit.)

I believe (I may be wrong on this) Its primarily a defensive thing the strands pack one heck of a whallop, (I think its part of their stomach) basicly they expell them when stressed or damaged to defend themselves then suck them back in.
