The pigments in the zooxanthellae reflect mostly reds and yellows, while the most common coral pigments reflect mostly green and blue.
that is vert interesting!! I was under the impression that the zooxanthellae was most of the color

I think the science of color is that what we see is always a reflection of the light spectrum for each item.

I was under the understanding that the coral do not eat phyto but instead feed on zooplankton. zooplankton being drifting animals and phytoplankton being drifting algaes.
Phyto feed the pods which which feed the corals.
