Hey all... Just wondering if there are any reef safe puffers... I have a dogface puffer, but started to get into coral/reef and my dogface basically ate up my scolynia and small zoa frag... and is going for my large zoa colony... So now i'm selling him... I really like puffers... are there any reef safe ones??
It is a tough choice... but i think i'm starting to like coral/reefs a little too much now.. and the dogface's sharp teeth is just to much for me to handle since he is just messing with everything. Some corals he won't touch... others he goes right for...
So far he doesn't mess with soft corals like leather... but ZOAS and scolynia/ and sps he will eat incase your curious.
Thanks.

None I ever heard of. They also eat other fish and they get big. I never owned one, just going by what have read and been told over the years. I saw a huge one at the store the other day. It had to be like 5" around, not puffed up. The guy said it would eat out of his hand. He said it was a little scary because it could't back up and it just keeps coming for the food till he pulled his hand out of the tank.

i have 2 gsp's in my reef and they leave the corals alone yet pick at the rock all day long.
i also had a blue spotted toby/ puffer that didn't touch anything either....yet i have a humu trigger that doesn't either so i may just be lucky

yea. i think the tobys are somewhat safe. I think the blue spotted and valentini. i was gonna get one, but that would mean it would most likely eat my clam, and I wasn't gonna let that happen. I think they are fairly safe, but there's still a chance it will eat corals. They may wipe out your snail population, and there's a small chance it might kill smaller fish.
I never had one, but posted a thread about them to see if i could get 1 in my reef.

Like always, goes back to the ole 'what do you definite as a 'reef." All Tobys are coral safe, and so are porcupines and burrfish. However all puffers are risks to a CUC which are useles anyways... And large porkys can be a risk to fellow fish. Dogface and other Arothron puffers tend to sample everything, inverts and corals.

sample everything is right!! lol... he is like a freaking machine...haha I think also is finding the right place for the coral and perhaps covering it... so far, i was able to cover the sides of my zoa, so the dogface couldn't get under it and eat it from below... so far, he hasn't gone after the top palop heads....
Also AquaKnight... what is a "CUC"?? & ca161...what is a "gsp?"" is that a gold puffer??

IDK if you're going to be able to keep it away. I think if the dogface wants to get to it, it will. Maybe you'll get lucky thouhg.
CUC is Clean up crew which are snails, crabs, starfish, etc. The things that clean up after your fishes' uneaten food and waste.
GSP are Green star polyps, a type of coral.
