DIY Refugium

Is there a certain kind of plastic you need to use for a refugium? Will the stuff they sell at Home Depot work?

The whole thing. It will be a HOB for my 20 gal reef tank.

Acrylic works... if you have a plastic shop in town they can custom cut everything to size for you or you can try yourself with stuff from like Home Depot.
One thing you'll need though is Weld-On instead of silicone as it won't bond to acrylic. It might hold it temporarily but won't be water tight. Weld-On chemically bonds it together.

you might also try using storage containers. a 30g or so is like $10 at wall mart.

perhaps the tank could hang on the back of the storage container.
