Don't Do This

Prob one of the most common no no's that new and experienced hobbiest's are guilty of doing. Do not over feed your fish/corals. This IMO is one of the top contributers leading to nussance algae, in our tanks.

Just to add... When feeding frozen foods DO NOT put the water that the food was thawed in, in the tank! Always strain off the water and just add the thawed food!

How come?

He's talking about the saturation that the frozen food has on phosphates.
However, he should have pointed out that you should rinse your frozen food too.
However, I let my refuge eat it up.

It depends on the food. Some of us do not buy frozen loaded with phosphates. I use Pro Salt brand. There are no preservatives at all. It is a mix of foods. I break a piece off, add vitamins and feed.

I make my own homemade food, using a seafood mixture of clams,shrimp,octo,mussels,.. add some garlic,Blend it,Freeze it,break off a chunk, thaw it in a little SW from the tank, and dump it in. Have done this for over a year now..No problems so far.

please correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you supposed to use the garlic immediately to get the benefits from it?
Yes if you are using it for medicinal purposes its suggested that you use fresh garlic juice. But for dietary reasons its only purpose is to enhance the fishes appetite and for that you dont need fresh garlic.

Sorry for the basic answer. But what about folks that don't have a fuge? What about folks that don't have access to fresh seafood or don't want to bother with homebrew food? What about the folks that will buy food that says all natural and still have algae problems b/c they just dump it in the tank?
I would have to believe that these are the majority of the cases and more the norm from what you guys do.
Again so sorry for such a basic response to a thread about overfeeding! But i was under the impression that this was some what of a newb forum for what not to do!
FWIW I don't rinse, I just thaw and strain........
Geez

Tim, I don't think that anyone was attacking what you said. I am sorry if it appeared that way. We were just exchanging how we feed our fish. You are correct, this is for new people and I think that everyones input was helpful here.

I must be really bad at feeding my fish then, because I just break some of the frozen stuff up and toss it right in. Today was the first time I took some water out of the tank, thawed the food in it and then put it all back in the tank to feed.

Rods food you do not have to rinse you can but you could be loosing all the small additives that he puts in there also he doesnt use any preservatives or that stuff.

Wow, that seems to be my problem! I'm brand new to this and I've been feeding 2-3x a day. I've got such a cloudy tank I can barely see the back of the tank. 65gal, 7fish, 3 urchins, 2 CC stars, 3 live rock, 1 dead coral. The water appears greenish so I've cut the light and feeding. Any other suggestions?

WOW Thats a lot !!!!

Start frequent water changes with new Salt water heated and mixed to the proper salinity of your tanks salinity. 30% Change wouldnt be out of the question to start, then 15% every 3 days for a couple of weeks. Test your water perameters check for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. Once a day is plenty to feed your fish, and no more food than they can consume inside of 2 minutes. Some people even feed every other day. Make sure your pH and alkalinity are at proper levels.

Right, if the tank is that cloudy then check your water readings. Post your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, PH, SG, and temp. Pre-mix your water for at least 24-48 hours. If the PH, SG, and temp match your display EXACTLY then you can do 50% changes. Don't add all of the water right back in. Add some, then let wait for a bit, then add more. Watch your equipment. Don't let anything run dry or the heating element of the heater to be out of water. BTW, Welcome to the boards!! How long has this tank been set up?

another thing to look at is where is the tank set up, i had the same problem and though i might have had the lights on to long or i was over feeding also but nothin ghelped, as it turned out my tank was getting sunlight threw my window for about 2 hours a day and thats when my tank would get very green but in the morning it would be cleared up and i was baffled, i covered the window and BAM in 3 days the green water was gone (water chages didnt help a bit eather, so if your tank is getting sunlight i would cover that up first and see if that fixs the problem befor all the water changes, if your tank isnt getting sunlight start the water changes
