would this be effective to help with nitrates? I have it stuffed in my sump but if I plumbed in a garbage can and put in some chaeto, will it be worth it? how would I go about plumbing it?

Salt show me some photos of your tanks.
The Cheato would help but I think there are other issues. What is your flow in each tank. List them seperate.
What is your sump skimmer set up.
what is your fuge set up.

I'll have to get some updated pics.
75g- 2 koralia 4's
75g- 2 koralia 4's 2 koralia 1's
sump- drains to bioballs, overflows to fuge(filled with chaeto),overflows into skimmer return pump section.
I have to get back on a steady water change schedule but I feel like I need something to support the tanks also, before/after water change day. the chaeto I have doesn't seem to do it.
I also added about 30 more pounds of baserock to the spotted moray tank so I should atleast be at 180#'s if not close to it.

I had my 75 with 6 fish feeding 3 times daily and trates never went above 20ppm in between water changes which were every 3 weeks or so.
How big is the sump? what model is your skimmer?

sump is a 30B and the skimmer is the ASM G-1, I got the other 75g kinda unexpectedly so never really got the chance to upgrade when I hooked up the newer 75g.

You need a asm g3 at least with that tank. How much Gunk are you pulling a week?
Personally Id get a bigger sump. 150 gallon tank with only 30 gallon sump. Or set up a 30 gallon fuge also. Load it with pods worms you name it. I would also get rid of the bio balls all together. Set up a fuge them the a pump to send water into your 30 sump.

the only way i can get a bigger skimmer is if I set up a seperate fuge, and put the asm 3 where my fuge is now in the sump. the sump i have now already has baffles in place so i would rather get another tank and make that the fuge, but i also dont have much room.

i was gonna take my fridge out of my room and put it there, i would have room under the 75 on the left when i get that old sump out but wont have room to put a nice size in.

I have a large fuge with a good bit of chaeto in it.... Yes I would think up to a point the more the better....... My Trates always are very low, even with being very lazy on PC's at times....
The problem I would see in using a container like a garbage can would be two fold.... Good water circulation in the mass for one. BUT I think the biggest issue would be adequate light for the Chaeto to live on deep in the mass. Yes we all know Chaeto does not need a great deal of light, but this still seems to me to be a big issue in the idea.....

good point.
I was thinking about that last night actually, cause I was just gonna get the bigger shop light, I think it's 10" diameter and hand it over it but that wouldn't penatrate deep enough. hmmm, maybe what I need to do is just make a bigger sump and switch it out for what I already have? sounds like SO much fun.
