hard water stains

my buddy just got a 70 gal. tank and it has white rings around the top. I suggested he try white vinegar and rinse really well after. any thoughts? I don't know if he should use something stronger for fear of leaving a residue that would kill any fish.

That would be ok, make sure he washes it out.

I had the same problem on mine and white vin worked great. They also sell aquarium safe cleaner on several sites that will take care of it.

Are you talking about salt creep, or do you know it's hard water stains? White wine vinegar cleans well. They also make some sprays that prevent salt creep, I guess if its real bad. You spritz it onto the rim or canopy or whatever it is.
