How Long Would You???

Leave a fish in QT that is eating very well and displaying no signs of stress/sickness? I know 4-6 weeks is ideal but here's why I ask. I ordered a fish at 2-3 inch size and he came at 6". Right now he is in a smaller QT doing well and I want to move him to my DT as soon as possible just to give him more room to swim. By the way this fish is a tang. So let me hear some opinions here, I'm all ears.

Ich could take up to 28 days to show up...might be fine, but you will be gambling. Especially with a tang.

Ok serious question here...I don't want to gamble because the reason I learned how beneficial a QT is was because of an ick outbreak from a tang. Why 28 days? Because of the life cycle of the parasite? I thought the cysts would show up around a week of the fish having it?

thats pretty much it dude, its life cycle is supposed to be something like 28 days or so, so, you QT for 6 weeks, an bam, your free an clear from ich if nothing shows up
is there anyway you could cycle a larger QT? how big is the one you have him in now?

Yeah, going hypothetically here...if the fish has ich, and one of those little suckers falls off the fish when you put it in there...it drops to the bottom, then depending on temperature yada yada yada...it could be 28 days before you see the 200-300 new ones. Two fish that I would proactively treat for ich regardless of appearance...tangs and puffers, they are just ich magnets.

He's in a 29. I never went out and bought a 55. I have a 29, a 20 and a 10 cycled now. The only reason I didn't go out and buy a 55 use that is because I knew after I placed my order with this site I would be at my limit of fish and wouldn't be using them anymore. If I had received a 2 or 3" fish I wouldn't even be worried about him in a 29 but 6" is a little much. This single fish alone made me go out and buy a 125 this past weekend.

Gotcha, now it makes sense. After I did the last hypo to make sure I don't have ich in my DT I might just go ahead and hypo this guy to be certain.

I haven't posted them because I didn't even want to hear that my tank isn't big enough from the tang police. He's a powder blue, and he's beautiful.
Petsmart was having a sell this past weekend for a 125G with all the lids and hood lights for $287. I went over to ***** where I know the people alot better, got them to pricematch, used a 25% off coupon they had sent me because I spend way too much money in that store and ended up getting the tank for $230. Then I sold the hoodlights for $50 so I got a brand new 125G for $180. I already knew where a stand was so I'm picking that up this week and 100 extra pounds of live rock. Then hopefully move everything over in the next couple months.

Ok here's another question then. If a tang has not displayed any signs of ick within the first week, what are the chances of the fish having it? Does it "usually" show up in the first week of QT?

if i had to absolutely get him in the DT quick, such as your case, id wait about 3 more days, an then put him in
He doesn't absolutely have to go. He doesn't appear stressed at all. He's already associating me with food and when I walk in the room he starts getting all excited. I think he would be ok in their for the duration if needed. I'm just looking at percentages here...The 1st tang I brough him had ich within a few days.

yeah, with them being such ich magnets, id try an keep him the full length of time, but, if you can find one cheap, get a used 55 or 75, an throw a filter on it, an get it cycling, just in case

Wait the full 4 weeks. As long as he's by himself, not stressing out (pacing the glass 24/7, etc), and you can maintain water quality, you should be fine. It's when you add a tankmate that space becomes a serious issue.

He doesn't appear stressed at all. He just wants to eat, eat , eat...I will wait the full 4 weeks then.
