How to break film on water surface?

My pH will not stay consistently around 8.2-8.4. I have a thin film layer on my water surface, but I adjusted my powerhead to break it up. Will this help the pH?

Not much surface agitation. I do not have a protein skimmer, and I would prefer now to get one. They seem to be too much trouble and break a lot.

I used to have the same problem. I just took paper towels and laid them across the top for a second and pulled them off. The paper towels soaked up the top layer and made it better.

A protein skimmer will pull out nasty stuff you can't even test for. You need one. A flow bar on a canister filter will help to break up the surface and also aid in water circulation.

My LFS suggests not to get a protein skimmer because the break often. He said he's had a tank for over 5 years and never had a ps.

I had the film you mentioned and now use an Eheim Surface Extractor to pull water down to my canister wet/dry filter. My surface is always crystal clear now. It will pull water from the surface (skim it) and the middle water column.
Looking back I should have done the sump with skimmer, and will eventually change, but this works perfect until then.

Proten simmer, canister filters , hob filters etc... Does nothn for the surface if its pullng water from the middle of the tank. U need some type of surface skimmer. Overflow box, built in overfows, prefilter box all skims the water from the surface. I'm thinkin of doing a DIY prefilter box for my HOB fuge. I'll post some pics after it's complete.

Thanks for the help all. In particular, I have a Eheim canister filter. Do you hook up the surface extractor to the canister filter?

Yes, your Eheim canister filter should have just come with a 'normal' water pick up tube & strainer. All you do is remove that and attach the surface extractor unit to the flexible hose that runs to your canister. You have to keep your water level within a certain range for it to skim properly, but since the tubes float it gives you a fair amount of room to work with.
They work great and have them on all 3 tanks!

How are they breaking?...there really isn't anything to break...aside the pump perhaps giving out. Buy a decent pump and you should be good to go
. They really pull out alot of gunk. I have 2 tanks with and 1 tank without one...just looking for that special buy

I paid $30.00 for a filter with surface skimmer from Drs Foster and Smith.com for my 75 gal. works great, took off the surface film and more, filters better than the Emporer 400 I had previously.
