well, my 9 month old 24 watt actinic burned out last week. i got the new replacement today, and boy! what a difference! the water was so nice and purple-y, and seemed clearer. the new 10k is coming in next week, and i will be replacing the 9 month old one that is still working. is this typical? it looks so good now, it looks better than when both bulbs were brand new! i wish i could have pics but my camera is acting dumb.
also, a brand new cleaner crew is in the mail, very exotic. so i am reakky upping my tank cleanliness.

Yes, it's typical. Fluorescent lights really diminish over time and should be replaced whether they are burned out or not.
