Peppermint shrimp attacked my new stylophora...???

Sorry to post this in 2 places (also posted in coral forum)... but it's killing me to know why that just happened.
I just put a new ORA Stylophora coral in my tank after acclimating for about 2 hours. And immediately one of my peppermint shrimp jumped on it. I didn't pay much attention because they do that to all new stuff. but I noticed dust like material flying up into the water...
so I looked and saw that he made a big white section on the coral...
what the heck is going on? is he eating the parts that had some die off in shipping?

Found something there he liked, probably not the coral itself. Is he done with it now?

Yeah I shooed him off with a pipe cleaner.
He tried to come back for more but funny enough the damsels chased him off and have him pinned back in his area.
but he cleaned off about a 10-20% section of the coral that is now pure white.
Will it survive that attack on the same day as being put in new conditions?
that coral was almost 50$.

The little crap head ate about 80% of the surface of the coral.. in about 5 hours.
it's about 80% pure white except for the very end caps on the top of the fingers now.
I'll give it a chance... but I think it's a lost cause.
