Too much oxygen in the water??

Possibly.
I think that the oxygen content has an effect on the alkalinity. In several marine planted tanks, where few animals are used, people have difficulties wit alkalinity, and PH swings. It seems like the reason for these swings is because the plants are using up all of the CO2, and converting it into O. Once these people started dosing CO2 into their tank, the alk. stabalized.
I am not a chemistry person, so I am not sure why these swings actually happen in the first place. All I know is that there is some anecdotal evidence that the amount of CO2 and O in a tank seems to affect the alk. and PH.
