Oh yeh....doh! OK I will try and get that tested at LFS tomorrow, what insight will that give me?
Also how many lbs of live sand do you think I shall need to 'seed' my current sand?

20lbs will be the minimum IMO. More - better!!!
If you will find that Nature's Ocean stuff - get 2 pack (40 lbs)

I have found the live sand you use! 20lbs for £30 ($50) so I am very pleased with that!
So the question is: how do i introduce it in the tank? What bout my fish and clean up crew? I dont want to burry any!

first of all, let's solve your diatom problem. After you will have diatom free tank we'll start with that LS.

I had diatoms appear about 6 months into my tanks life. They showed up for about a month then dissapeared. I couldn't figure out why they came or went. I had not made any changes in feeding or lighting for 2 months prior. I just chalked it up to my tank just settling into a groove.
