I received a reply about the nutramar :(

Hi Sara,
Thank you for your email.

Unfortunately, we lost our supplier for OVA during last season’s poor harvest.

To date, we have not been able to find another supplier for this extremely unique product.

We continue to search, but at this point the outlook is not good.

I wish I had better news.

Best regards,

Lonnie

Oh definitely. I didn't find any online for sale and only found posts about no one being able to find it. So I emailed, and that was the response.

I'm hoping decapsulated brine shrimp eggs is a good enough replacement. I know nutramar was a shrimp egg. I've been able to find fish egg, but not frozen yet, but I didn't look that hard. I'm not sure which fish egg or any is right?

I've got my pod culture up and running and I have seen more pods on the glass than when I started, so I think it is working. I've not got enough heat on it yet though, I know they are OK at lots of temperatures, but they would do better reproducing at a temp closer to the aquarium.

I've also decided to do a full blown sump instead of just the jar idea. It will be a little trickier to set up, but it will give more room and I'll replace the canister filter with some in sump filtration. Just need to figure out the best layout and plumbing. I'll probably start a new thread on that.

I think I contaminated my culture with brine shrimp. I dropped their bottle as soon as I picked it up and it splattered in the cabinet I have the cultures in.

Will they breed, or do they always have to be hatched? I spent 30 minutes sucking out what looked like brine while trying to avoid actual pods.

Other than that things are going well. The culture is definitely producing.

He finally was eating in his diner today! I put a mix of BBS and cyclopeeze in it and he was pecking around. Who knows which he was eating, but until today he was avoiding the diner completely.

A 10g sump/refugium is in the works. I plan to devote as much space in it as possible to the refugium part. I don't have much equipment for this tank. Actually only thing I could move to the sump currently is the heater. I don't plan to do a skimmer.

They will reproduce if you give them a chance. They're very easy to remove though. Just let them grow out a bit and once they're to 1/4" or so you should be able to use a net to scoop them out.

That's the idea. I'll be hunting them every time I harvest. Hopefully it wasn't many.

A little update.

Things are going well still. He hasn't taken to frozen food, but we keep trying. Or I say he hasn't, but he does eat some of the cyclopeeze once it settles to the ground and rocks and the current makes it look as if it were moving a little.

The refugium is still in the making. I need to post more questions on that thread. I have the overflow and pump, but now the plumbing is confusing me.

The pod farm is going very well!!! Tonight there are dozens of pods easily visible on the wall, so I know it is doing well. I'm also culturing phyto to feed the pods and my filter feeders.

My setup is still crude, but is working. I'll fine tune it after I get the refugium up.

A few pictures

I'm glad to see you going to so much trouble to give the little guy the best chance at a happy life. Glad he's eating Cyclopeeze, as it's very nutritious, and a great supplement to the pods. Way to go!

Thanks :)

Today I checked up on my pod culture and was amazed! So much so I took a video!

Check out all that movement!

The sump is coming along well. I forgot to order my rock rubble so it'll have to run with very little rock but maybe that's a good idea, just add a little at a time?

Made a video of the 2oz draw from the pod culture tonight. I've now got 2 gallon jugs devoted to tisbe pods. They are growing very well! I can easily see dozens, and I know there are more I can't see, just in this 2oz specimen.

Sorry for the portrait, didn't realize it didn't auto rotate while I was taking the video.
